Detective Conan Episodes 1148–1149: The Detective Boys and the Two Leaders

Spoilers follow for the complete beach-house case, Subaru’s identity and the connections to the case from seventeen years earlier.

The Detective Boys and the Two Leaders (Part 1) and The Detective Boys and the Two Leaders (Part 2) are international episodes 1206-1207 (Japanese episodes 1148-1149). They adapt Volume 103, Files 1097-1099: The Chaperones, Beach House and Fall Back. Maika Kayaki kills the beach-house manager and frames Koriyama, while Rumi Wakasa and Subaru Okiya watch one another as carefully as they watch the children.

The murder is resolved through Koriyama’s abnormal drowsiness and a switched towel blanket marked by Genta’s food. The larger storyline stays less settled: Wakasa’s interest in Haibara, her scrutiny of Subaru’s appearance and her memory of Tsutomu Akai supply connections without revealing everything she knows.

An apparently quiet news report leaves Conan suspicious

An apparently quiet news report leaves Conan suspicious

At Teitan Elementary School, Conan sees a report treating the emergency alarm from the preceding hotel bombing case as a malfunction. He notices that eyewitness phone footage is absent despite the incident’s news value. The gap in the coverage prompts suspicion rather than supplying a direct answer.

One possibility is that the elderly man with the respirator has influence over the coverage and wants the relevant images kept out of public view. That would imply considerable power, but the absence of footage does not establish either interference or who ordered it. The scene leaves a question hanging over the outing that follows.

The children want to visit a Shizuoka beach running a Kamen Yaiba collaboration. Professor Agasa cannot go because of sudden back trouble, and Wakasa offers to accompany them. Conan worries that she will use the trip to probe Ai Haibara, so he asks Subaru to join them as protection.

Subaru is Shuichi Akai in disguise. His presence creates a double effect: the children have another capable adult nearby, but the two chaperones are not simply relaxed companions. Each is alert to what the other may be concealing.

At the beach house, the group enjoys the themed menu. Genta drops a Yaiba-themed sausage and stains a towel blanket. It looks like an ordinary food mishap, but the stain later makes one piece of fabric distinguishable from another.

The body and the sleeping man make a persuasive false picture

Manager Usui is found strangled in the back room, wrapped in a towel blanket. Koriyama is sleeping in the same room, and his fingerprints and palm prints are on the fabric. The people with access to the back-room key include Koriyama, Kayaki and Sakura Menda.

The combination seems to point directly to Koriyama: he is beside the body and has left traces on the material around it. Conan instead questions his unusually heavy drowsiness. If someone deliberately incapacitated him, his presence could be part of a frame-up rather than evidence of his opportunity to kill.

The drink and the towel expose Kayaki’s scheme

The drink and the towel expose Kayaki's scheme

The episode explains Koriyama’s condition through medication placed in the straw of his preferred grapefruit juice. Haibara identifies nifedipine and discusses the interaction involved. Within the case, the drugged drink accounts for his incapacitation and lets Conan separate a sleeping suspect from the person arranging the scene.

Kayaki targets Usui while he is asleep and strangles him with the towel blanket. She uses the fabric to wrap the body and arranges for Koriyama’s hand traces to implicate him. She has also worn a towel blanket as clothing, changing to another one after the crime.

Genta’s earlier food stain makes the substitution detectable. The blanket that became dirty during the cheerful meal cannot simply be treated as interchangeable with the other fabric afterward. Its movement ties Kayaki’s clothing, the murder weapon and the wrapping around the body into the same sequence.

The solution works because the two strands reinforce one another. The drink explains why Koriyama can be placed in the wrong role; the stained blanket reveals how Kayaki uses and exchanges the objects that make that role look convincing. A familiar scene of Genta making a mess becomes a way to test the murderer’s account.

A brother’s death lies behind the revenge

A brother's death lies behind the revenge

Kayaki’s younger brother had been made to collect money for a fraud ring. Koriyama drew him into the group, and he died in a fall while being pursued by police. After his death, the group even demanded that Kayaki cover the loss they associated with him.

Usui and Koriyama are connected to that criminal circle. Kayaki appears to cooperate while preparing retaliation: kill Usui, then make Koriyama responsible for the killing. The plan attacks both men in different ways, rather than seeking only the manager’s death.

Her anger comes from a painful loss and continued exploitation, but the result is still murder and an attempt to assign that murder to someone else. Koriyama’s own wrongdoing does not make him Usui’s killer. Inspector Sango Yokomizo arrests Kayaki for the crime she committed.

Wakasa and Subaru test each other on the beach

Wakasa and Subaru test each other on the beach

Away from the children’s swimming, Wakasa tells Subaru that he seems familiar. She describes a sense of strength and dependability that is unusually personal for her guarded manner. The later memory gives that impression a possible source; familiarity alone does not mean she has identified the man beneath the disguise.

Subaru asks whether her long sleeves at a summer beach might conceal marks on her skin. Wakasa answers by questioning his high neck and the contrast between sweating arms and a face that does not seem to sweat. Their polite exchange is really an inspection of what clothing and skin might hide.

Her observation strongly suggests that she suspects an artificial face or disguise. It does not establish that she knows Subaru is Shuichi Akai, why he is disguised or every role he occupies. Recognizing that an appearance may be false is a narrower discovery than recognizing the person behind it.

What does Wakasa suspect about Haibara?

What does Wakasa suspect about Haibara?

Wakasa wonders whether Haibara could be the daughter of a woman who disrupted her life. Her allusion points toward Elena Miyano. During the investigation, she also asks where Haibara acquired such advanced knowledge of drugs, remarking on how much she resembles a scientist.

Conan is alarmed by those questions. Haibara, however, does not visibly panic or turn hostile toward Wakasa. That calm could suggest she senses what Wakasa is probing, but it is not confirmation that the two share a complete understanding of her identity.

Further spoilers for the seventeen-year-old case: Amanda Hughes, whom Wakasa protected, and Koji Haneda, toward whom she had feelings, both died in events tied to the poison research connected with Elena. Those losses offer a possible explanation for her resentment of Elena and her interest in Elena’s daughter. They do not by themselves establish what she intends to do to Haibara.

The attack turns the chaperones into protectors

The attack turns the chaperones into protectors

The danger does not end with Kayaki’s arrest. Koriyama and members of the criminal group try to attack the children. Subaru moves to protect them and tells Wakasa to take the children and Sakura somewhere safe. Wakasa also acts decisively, overpowering several attackers and protecting the people with her.

Subaru’s instruction recalls a moment from Wakasa’s past. Tsutomu Akai had told her to retreat while he faced a formidable opponent himself, judging that a young woman with a future should not spend her life fighting that threat. The flashback establishes that they met and that he protected her.

The parallel helps explain why Subaru feels familiar and dependable to her. It connects her memories to the Akai family while Tsutomu’s present whereabouts remain unclear. Nor does this scene alone provide a complete account of the opponent he faced or everything that happened after that encounter.

Conan and Subaru notice marks on Wakasa’s fists after she defeats the attackers. Her performance makes clear that she has abilities far beyond those of an ordinary teacher. Sakura offers to testify to the police, while the two adults’ protection gives the title a meaning that the initial travel arrangement could only hint at.

Two kinds of resolution, one uneasy ending

Two kinds of resolution, one uneasy ending

The murder has a concrete answer: a drugged suspect, a switched blanket, a food stain and a revenge plan. The adults’ encounter leaves questions instead. That contrast lets the beach-house mystery deliver a full solution while maintaining the tension around Wakasa’s history and Haibara’s safety.

The strongest payoff is that both chaperones finally do the job their title promises. Their motives and secrets remain complicated, but when the children face immediate danger, their competence becomes protection. That reassurance sits beside, rather than erases, the unease in their earlier conversation.
