Detective Conan Episode 1140: Girls Day Mystery 3

Spoilers follow for the theft, diversion and capture in this episode.

Girls Day Mystery 3 is international episode 1198 (Japanese episode 1140), an anime-original story. The suspicious job is a diversion for a crown theft at Kaneko’s jewelry store. Ran Mouri, Sonoko Suzuki, Ai Haibara, Ayumi Yoshida and Detective Miwako Sato uncover the plan and catch the thief without Conan solving the case for them.

The group returns from Girls Day Mystery, international episode 1149 (Japanese episode 1091), and Girls Day Mystery 2, international episode 1176 (Japanese episode 1118). This third outing uses their playful teamwork to investigate something more troubling than a costume event: ordinary applicants are being recruited to create cover for a crime.

Sonoko brings the others together after finding a job advertisement offering 50,000 yen for a day spent dressed as a ninja and visiting specified places. They join the activity in pink ninja costumes to investigate. Ayumi enjoys the make-believe, while Haibara and Sato remain noticeably more composed.

The number of costumed applicants at the station makes it easy to blend in. Ran also joins the playful mood, and Ayumi starts giving their actions ninja-style names. That lightness gives the investigation its character, but the extra instructions attached to the job change its meaning.

Some additional missions call for shoplifting or damage to property. At a cafe, the group reasons that these incidents would draw police attention toward the scattered ninjas. A much larger crime could then take place while officers are occupied elsewhere.

They map where the ninjas have been told to gather and compare the crowded areas with the quieter ones. The pattern leads them to suspect Kaneko’s jewelry store, which is displaying a valuable crown. The store’s new security system seems reassuring, but the group does not dismiss the possibility of another attack there.

The suspicion proves correct. The crown is stolen, and the shop owner is found collapsed after being attacked by a ninja. A cheerful-looking street event has become the cover for an actual robbery. The contrast makes the diversion feel more unsettling than the costumes initially suggest.

This is the case’s useful deduction step: the group does not simply chase whichever ninja looks suspicious. The geography of the distractions helps reveal the intended target. The minor offenses matter because they explain how the thief expects to gain time and freedom of movement.

Haibara helps lure the culprit by sending direct messages that appear to suggest a useful escape route. The group uses those messages to guide him toward Beika Station, where they can wait for him. Instead of merely reacting to his movements, they begin shaping his decisions.

The teamwork retains its comic flavor. Sonoko throws herself into the ambush theme, while Ayumi and Ran somehow make the social-media wording sound like a love letter. Those touches keep the five distinct rather than turning them into interchangeable assistants.

Sato notices the bag and the chain-mail costume, and Ran blocks the escape route. The group corners the thief at the station and captures him. The crown is recovered, and the grateful shop owner provides a welcome release after the attack.

Why this girls’ day works as a mystery

The satisfying part is the continuity between the opening investigation and the finish. The group first reads the organizers’ instructions, then reads the map those instructions create, and finally feeds the culprit instructions of its own. Haibara’s information tactic appears to reverse the control that made the job scheme dangerous.

Ayumi’s eagerness to help, Sato’s steadiness and Ran’s decisive support give the conclusion its energy. Conan has very little to do here, and that is the point of the group’s accomplishment: they carry the investigation through to the capture themselves. The episode balances an enjoyable costume adventure with the threat hidden in apparently easy money.
