Detective Conan Episode 1146: The Whistling Bookstore 4

Spoilers follow for the death, the book cipher and the person responsible.

The Whistling Bookstore 4 is international episode 1204 (Japanese episode 1146), an anime-original story. The book’s 200,000-yen price conceals a trade in stolen valuables. The delivery worker who has been diverting those transactions causes Kirishima’s death during a confrontation, then removes the cipher and the book needed to read it.

The solution depends on following what is missing: a rectangular gap in bloodstains, a torn-out note and a book that should still be in the room. Together, they turn a suspicious resale listing into a route to the culprit.

Ami's keepsake enters a transaction she never intended

The Detective Boys are reading at Tamaki’s book cafe when Ami Komachi arrives to recover a book she accidentally sold. It belonged to her late father and matters to her for reasons that have nothing to do with market value. The shop has already sold it to Kenichi Kirishima.

Kirishima refuses her request to buy it back. He says he has already resold it online and leaves after roughly pushing her aside. Conan and Haibara inspect the listing and discover the price: 200,000 yen for a book Tamaki knows is not a rare or exceptionally valuable edition.

That is the first useful distinction. A high price might normally suggest a scarce book, but Tamaki’s expertise removes that simple explanation. Something other than the printed volume must account for the money changing hands.

A returned key opens a different kind of story

A returned key opens a different kind of story

Around closing time, Tamaki goes to Kirishima’s apartment to return a key left at the cafe. The children accompany him part of the way. Moments after they separate, his cry brings them running: Kirishima is lying in blood with a fatal injury to the back of his head.

Part of the blood pattern on the table stops along a rectangular outline. An object was there when the blood landed and has since been removed. The unexplained absence is significant before anyone knows which book is missing.

The forgotten key opens a safe containing expensive watches and jewelry, raising the possibility of stolen goods. Apartment security footage shows two relevant visitors, Ami and a delivery worker. Her distress over the book makes her a visible suspect, but the contents of the safe point toward a larger business behind Kirishima’s dealings.

The torn note contains a book cipher

The torn note contains a book cipher

Conan finds a bloodstained notepad with a page roughly torn away. Light reveals the pressure marks left by the missing writing: sequences of numbers. Tamaki identifies a book cipher, in which three numbers direct the reader to a page, a line and a character.

Such a code needs a particular book as its key. Removing both the note and that book would delay anyone trying to discover the next handover point. The rectangular gap on the table fits the removal of the volume used to decode the message.

Kirishima has carefully retained his purchase receipts, letting the investigators work out which books ought to be present. The cipher’s line numbers also suggest a book with a two-column layout. Tamaki’s knowledge turns those separate constraints into a way of finding the missing key volume.

The listings were a cover for stolen jewelry

Kirishima advertises ordinary books at abnormal prices on a resale site. Hashtags indicate the hidden transaction and describe the jewelry being traded. Buyers collect the valuables from a coin locker identified through the book cipher, allowing the exchange to occur without a direct meeting.

The delivery worker notices this system through his collection and delivery work and begins taking the goods for himself. Kirishima discovers the interference and confronts him at the apartment. During the struggle, the worker shoves Kirishima, whose head strikes the corner of the table, causing the fatal injury.

The death is described as the result of that confrontation, not a prearranged killing using a special device. The worker then takes the torn cipher note and key book and tries to recover the valuables at the next locker. Concealing the evidence and taking the profit pull him toward the same place.

Why the locker stakeout is decisive

After decoding the message, police watch the designated lockers at Beika Station the following morning. The delivery worker from the apartment footage arrives. He reacts violently when questioned and is subdued by Takagi, who arrests him for obstructing the officers. Stolen jewelry is found in the locker.

He also has the torn cipher paper. His presence at the specified locker shows knowledge of the concealed transaction, while the paper links him directly to the material removed from Kirishima’s room. The bloodstain outline explains why the key book disappeared. Each clue supplies a different part of the connection rather than simply repeating that the man looks suspicious.

The book returns to its original value

Ami ultimately gets her father’s book back. That outcome matters because the story began with two incompatible ideas of value: a daughter’s keepsake and a criminal’s convenient object for hiding a price. Recovering the book gives the case a warmer ending without making Kirishima’s death less bleak.

Tamaki’s expertise gives the investigation the pleasure of a search through books and receipts, briefly lightening the discovery of a violent death. Genta and Mitsuhiko’s efforts to shield Ayumi and Haibara at the scene also preserve the group’s care for one another amid the investigation.

The closing whistle and Genta’s book-cipher joke restore the series’ familiar atmosphere. The lingering unease is that an ordinary resale app and a single shove are enough to turn the cafe’s quiet world into a fatal encounter.
