A trip to Kanazawa reopens a band’s unresolved past

Kogoro, Ran and Conan travel to Kanazawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Kogoro insists on meeting his client alone, so Conan plants a listening device on him and follows the conversation while sightseeing with Ran. The light travel atmosphere soon gives way to an unresolved crime.

The client is Yumeno Arihara, a gallery-shop employee and Kanazawa publicity ambassador. She has received an anonymous message referring to something she did three years earlier. At that time she was the vocalist in a band with drummer Domon, guitarist Tanemura and bassist Kinomoto.

Eight million yen raised at a charity concert disappeared. The theft was never solved, and the band broke up. Tanemura remained under suspicion because his guitar case had been used to take the money. Arihara’s request appears to offer a chance to discover both who sent the message and what happened to the donations.

Conan’s kidnapper wants the former members together

Conan senses someone watching him, and then a gun is pressed to his head. The abductor calls Kogoro and demands that Domon, Tanemura, Kinomoto and Arihara be assembled by the following day. A historical theft has abruptly become an immediate threat to Conan.

The kidnapper is surfer Ryusei Inami. His gun is fake, and he does not intend to hurt Conan: he is a fan who wants the band together again. That changes the meaning of the apparent armed threat, although restraining and abducting a child remains a frightening way to pursue that wish.

Inami has surveillance footage from the charity theft. It shows a red-clad man putting the money into a guitar case. Meanwhile, Arihara, Domon and Tanemura can be gathered locally, while Kinomoto has continued to hold on to music. The footage promises an answer to the accusation that helped destroy their band.

The damaged brakes turn a strange abduction into real danger

The damaged brakes turn a strange abduction into real danger

After Conan and Inami spend time surfing, they find that Inami’s uncle’s workshop has been ransacked. Hearing someone approach, they flee by car. On the descent, the brakes fail; the car hits a guardrail and goes over the cliff.

Conan’s Elasticity Suspenders save them. The sequence makes the contrast sharp: Inami’s apparently lethal weapon was a prop, but the interference with the car is a genuine attempt to eliminate someone. The search of the workshop also points toward evidence that another person wants removed.

At Yamashiro Onsen, the letter’s real recipient comes to light

At Yamashiro Onsen, the letter’s real recipient comes to light

Kogoro, Arihara, Domon and Tanemura gather at Yamashiro Onsen. Tanemura’s car is there with his guitar case inside. Ran had seen Arihara meeting Kinomoto the previous day, and Arihara admits that he told her he wrote the threatening letter.

Conan and Inami arrive with Kinomoto, who turns out to be Inami’s uncle. Kinomoto supplies the crucial correction: he sent the letter to Domon, not to Arihara. Domon cut it in half and passed part of it to her, changing the apparent direction of the accusation.

The altered letter explains why Arihara’s request cannot be taken at face value as evidence that she was its intended target. The warning originated inside the band’s unresolved history, but someone has manipulated the document before the investigation even begins.

Handedness, gold leaf and a revealing remark expose Domon

Handedness, gold leaf and a revealing remark expose Domon

The surveillance video does not support the old assumption about Tanemura. He is left-handed, while the figure shown taking the money uses his right hand. Possession of the guitar case had made Tanemura look guilty; the way it is used in the footage points away from him.

The sabotaged car belongs to Kinomoto. The attack was aimed at him because of the evidence he held, but Conan and Inami were the people who happened to use it. Keeping the intended target separate from the actual occupants explains how the old theft escalates into the cliff incident.

Conan also notices a golden glint on the handle of Tanemura’s guitar case. Through Sleeping Kogoro, he connects the gold leaf with the previous day’s disturbance at Kinomoto’s workshop: it could have adhered when the case was there during the search. Its presence makes the case useful for tracing recent actions as well as the three-year-old theft.

Domon then reveals knowledge of Kinomoto’s car that he should not have had, describing its shabby condition. The remark joins the altered letter, the footage and the gold-leaf trace in exposing him. The deduction is cumulative: the guitar case alone is not a reliable label for its owner’s guilt.

Domon tries to escape by car. Conan pursues him, with the Elasticity Suspenders and the gold-leaf skateboard adding the episode’s characteristic spectacle, and the case is resolved. The attempt to keep Tanemura under suspicion finally fails.

The reunion offers something the culprit could not control

The reunion offers something the culprit could not control

The story moves from the pleasures of sightseeing to the discomfort of a band meeting under an accusation it never settled. The theft costs more than eight million yen: it leaves relationships frozen around a suspicion, making the later discoveries emotionally meaningful as well as mechanically satisfying.

Inami’s methods are coercive, but the possibility of a reunion gives his original wish a more hopeful form. The members promise to reunite, with Inami potentially taking the drummer’s place. The closing train journey and Nagano-station gag restore the trip’s lighter mood after the case’s betrayal and danger.

The best connection between setting and mystery is the gold leaf. It belongs naturally to the local atmosphere, yet also becomes a trace that challenges the culprit’s account. Alongside the letter cut in half and the wrong-handed figure, it helps turn a reunion forced by a kidnapping into a reassessment of what the band believed.
