Detective Conan Episode 1160: When the Shishi-odoshi Sounds

Spoilers follow for the murderer, the photograph’s deception and the ending.

When the Shishi-odoshi Sounds, international episode 1218 (Japanese episode 1160), is an anime-original murder mystery. The culprit is Motomiya, the photographer who claims to have captured the attack by chance. He uses the garden’s shishi-odoshi to time the photograph and plants visual details that direct suspicion toward the victim’s pupil.

Conan and Kogoro visit a well-known tea room and are asked by Takagi and Chiba to help investigate an attack on tea instructor Jun Komada. A photograph appears to show the weapon descending toward his head, but the attacker’s face is hidden and the clothing is too dark to distinguish clearly.

Motomiya says he was in the nearby woods photographing birds. His explanation puts him in the position of an accidental observer with unusually valuable evidence. The picture seems to offer a direct view of the crime, even though the information needed to identify the assailant remains concealed.

Three people nearby become suspects: moss researcher Morita, Komada’s pupil Okawa and woodland caretaker Kijima. Morita’s activities in the woods, Okawa’s difficulty obtaining authorization from his teacher and the tensions around the property give the inquiry several possible directions.

Making an image clearer does not make its story reliable

Motomiya crops the picture and adjusts its exposure. Japanese-style clothing and a jade-colored bracelet become visible, pointing toward Okawa. Chiba also uses location information to establish where the image was taken. The apparent strength of the evidence grows as more detail is extracted from the file.

Yet clearer detail cannot settle whether the event in front of the lens was deliberately arranged. The investigation has to question the photographer’s account as well as examine the image he provides. In this case, the clothes and bracelet are useful to the murderer precisely because they seem to identify someone else.

Morita’s flight from the police has a separate explanation: he has been collecting moss without permission. Kijima also supplies footage concerning the dispute between Okawa and Komada, trying to prevent a false accusation. Suspicious behavior and a recorded argument need to be assessed for what each actually establishes.

The garden sound provides a predictable moment

The garden sound provides a predictable moment

Conan is struck by the unnatural photograph and testimony that the woods were quieter than usual. The garden’s shishi-odoshi, with its recurring knock, becomes central to understanding how the supposed coincidence was manufactured. Motomiya uses that sound as a timing reference for the shot.

The image is therefore part of the crime’s staging, not an independent witness to it. Motomiya coordinates the moment of photography and the appearance of the attacker, using the clothing and bracelet to make Okawa seem responsible. The very evidence that appeared to put him outside the crime was evidence he had prepared.

The revenge behind the false witness

Motomiya’s grievance concerns his sister, who died by suicide after her relationship with Komada. He holds Komada responsible for her suffering and death. That loss supplies the revenge motive behind the attack and his attempt to frame the pupil.

The explanation through Sleeping Kogoro urges an end to further wrongdoing. The case’s emotional weight comes from grief being turned into a plan that would also ruin an uninvolved suspect. Identifying Motomiya answers the puzzle, but it does not make the background any less painful.

Why the quiet setting makes the deception effective

Why the quiet setting makes the deception effective

The tea garden’s peaceful atmosphere makes the violent photograph especially jarring. Its ordinary sound becomes a mechanism for planning, while photographic adjustments make a misleading interpretation look increasingly precise. The mystery works by separating a sharp image from a trustworthy explanation of how it came to exist.

The closing joke about the bitterness of matcha brings a little lightness back to the tea-room setting. It softens the final moment without removing the more lasting bitterness of the motive and the false accusation.
