Detective Conan Episode 1161: The Secret's Afterimage

Spoilers follow for the episode’s resolution and the fate of Koji Sametani in One-eyed Flashback.

The Secret’s Afterimage, international episode 1219 (Japanese episode 1161), is an anime-original epilogue to One-eyed Flashback. Detective Sawatari is not conducting the affair Megure suspects. He is helping deliver an engagement ring intended by his late colleague Koji Sametani, whom Kogoro knew as Wani, to the woman Sametani meant to marry.

Megure asks Kogoro for a discreet investigation

Megure arrives at the Mouri Detective Agency with what he considers a serious problem involving a valued subordinate. He knows Sawatari’s wife, who is staying with her family, and believes Sawatari is seeing another woman in her absence. He wants Kogoro to obtain clear evidence and stop the situation before it brings further trouble.

His suspicions begin with a discarded receipt showing a cafe meal that included a women’s set, together with information about lunch with a beautiful woman. Footage from an unmarked police car’s dashcam also places Sawatari at a luxury jewelry store and buying flowers. Each detail can be read as part of an affair, especially once Megure is already expecting one.

Sawatari seems to be hiding something when Megure asks indirectly. Concern for his colleague makes Megure determined, but secrecy alone does not establish the reason for the meetings. The investigation has to discover what the purchases and visits are actually for.

Conan notices that Sawatari’s earlier jewelry-store visit lasted only about five minutes. He suspects that the short visit may not have involved buying a gift. That observation introduces a different possibility before the group has identified the woman or the purpose of the ring.

While following Sawatari, they see him meeting the woman again. Kogoro approaches with a digital camera and nearly gives the inquiry away, but Conan improvises to preserve their cover. Sawatari and the woman then enter the jewelry store together.

Ran follows them inside and sees the woman’s left ring finger being measured. Megure also learns that Sawatari has searched for disciplinary guidelines. To him, the fitting and the search look like further confirmation that his subordinate knows he is doing something wrong. Neither yet explains whose ring this is.

Conan places a transmitter and listening device on Sawatari. When the investigators catch the moment the woman receives a ring on her left ring finger, Megure intervenes. Sawatari apologizes, appearing at first to confirm the suspected wrongdoing. The explanation that follows changes the meaning of the scene.

The flowers lead toward remembrance

The flowers lead toward remembrance

Ran checks the flowers Sawatari bought and identifies chrysanthemums. In the circumstances of this case, they point toward mourning for someone close to the pair, rather than a new romance between them. The ring is connected to that loss.

Sawatari has been sorting the belongings of a detective who had helped him. He discovers that the late man intended to give the woman an engagement ring. Sawatari’s meetings and jewelry-store visits are part of passing on that intended gift after the man’s death.

The detective is Koji Sametani, known to Kogoro as Wani. The woman is the partner he had planned to marry. Once that connection is understood, the left-hand ring fitting and the private meetings no longer tell the story Megure assumed they did.

Megure says he will speak with the higher-ups, and the immediate misunderstanding is settled. Sawatari’s apology and concern about discipline were not sufficient grounds to certify an affair; the missing context was the obligation he felt toward a deceased colleague and that colleague’s partner.

How the episode follows One-eyed Flashback

How the episode follows One-eyed Flashback

The film connection is present before the final revelation. Conan’s mention of Sawatari’s P3 prompts a callback to its role in One-eyed Flashback. The later ring story then turns that connection from an investigative reference into a personal aftermath.

Sametani had discussed marriage with Kogoro in the film. Learning about the woman and the ring gives that earlier conversation an additional sadness: there was a future being planned that he could not reach. The gift survives as a way for someone else to carry out a part of his intention.

The episode’s appeal comes from allowing the same observations to acquire a different meaning. A cafe visit, flowers and a ring begin as evidence in a suspicious story and end as parts of a farewell. The resolution is warm because someone remembers Sametani’s wishes, and painful because he cannot fulfill them himself.
