Detective Conan Episodes 1171–1172: The Reason He Became a Butler

Spoilers follow for the train murder, the evidence on the USB drive, Iori’s past and the final call to Amuro.

The Reason He Became a Butler, international episodes 1229–1230 (Japanese episodes 1171–1172), adapts Files 1113–1115 across Volumes 104 and 105. Muga Iori became Momiji Ooka’s butler after she cared for his injury during a police assignment three years earlier. A new murder forces him to use his former skills again when three operatives threaten her to make him retrieve incriminating evidence.

Iori arranges the meeting, then loses control of the journey

Heiji Hattori and Kazuha Toyama are taking the bullet train to Tokyo to see Ran. Momiji and Iori appear beside them, apparently because Momiji has a karuta competition in the city. In reality, Iori learned of Heiji’s trip and secured the neighboring seats for her.

A drunk passenger spills beer on Iori. He leaves to clean the stain at the washbasin and finds a phone that someone has left there. Answering its call puts him in contact with a person who knows both his former public-security police career and his present work for the Ooka family.

The caller uses Momiji as a hostage threat and orders Iori to find a USB drive belonging to a man already dead on the train. Iori has to appear compliant while assessing what he has been drawn into and how to protect her.

The victim is a freelance writer. From the body and surrounding circumstances, Iori reconstructs an attempt to force him from his seat, demand the USB drive and stab him when he resisted. The killers have failed to locate what they wanted, making Iori’s investigative ability useful to them.

The operation involves divided roles: a man holding a knife behind Iori, another directing movements through an earpiece, and a separate person waiting to collect the drive. The danger lies in coordinated observation inside a confined train, rather than an elaborate locked-room mechanism.

Heiji notices that Iori is not answering Momiji’s calls and behaves differently when he returns. That concern leads him to investigate instead of accepting Iori’s attempt to carry the problem alone. Conan joins the inquiry from a distance after Heiji contacts him.

Heiji finds shorthand written on the writer’s right thigh and sends a photograph to Conan. Conan reads it as kutsushita, the Japanese word for socks. The victim’s final message identifies the hiding place of the USB drive.

Heiji retrieves the drive before Iori reaches it. A later inspection therefore reveals the trace of its hiding place rather than the drive still waiting there. Keeping the order clear matters: the search succeeds through cooperation, and Iori can then act out a discovery for the people watching him.

Following the plan with Heiji and Conan, Iori makes it appear that he has found the drive. The criminals tell him to leave it at the washbasin. When two of the men move, Heiji and Kazuha restrain them, but those two captures do not yet account for the collector.

The supposed attendant completes the group of three

The supposed attendant completes the group of three

A woman posing as an onboard sales attendant is the third operative. Iori notices that she does not acknowledge passengers with the customary bow as she moves through the train. That behavior does not fit the role she is trying to play.

She is waiting to recover the USB, making the apparently routine service role part of the operation. By the train’s arrival at Tokyo Station, all three operatives are secured. The shorthand message locates the evidence, and Iori’s attention to conduct identifies the person still positioned to take it.

The evidence concerns a politician’s corruption scandal. His secretary was said to have jumped from a rooftop after taking responsibility for bribery allegations. The recording instead shows the secretary being pushed by the group, with the politician himself present.

The train murder is therefore another stage in concealing an earlier killing. The writer was targeted because he possessed the video, and the operatives tried to use Iori to recover it. The footage exposes the politician’s own involvement as well as the false account of the secretary’s death.

An old attacker recognizes the man behind the butler’s role

An old attacker recognizes the man behind the butler’s role

One of the men involved had encountered Iori three years earlier, when Iori checked security at the villa of former prime minister Ooka. The man had been part of an attempt to attack the former leader. Iori defeated him, but he escaped and later became involved in the present cover-up.

That history explains why the caller recognizes Iori’s professional past. An earlier exchange with Hyoue Kuroda had already revealed the undercover name Sakakibara and Iori’s habit of checking for anyone following him. The train case turns those old skills into immediate tools for protecting Momiji.

Momiji treated the wound that changed his life

Momiji treated the wound that changed his life

After the confrontation at the villa, Iori tried to rest in the kitchen’s underfloor storage area and encountered the younger Momiji there. She saw a large cut on his right arm and carefully covered it with many small adhesive bandages.

Her explanation reversed the familiar idea that something large can serve the purpose of something small: enough small things can also meet a larger need. The gesture and the thought behind it stayed with Iori. He came to regard Momiji as someone he wanted to protect, left police work and became her butler.

That memory gives the title its emotional answer. Iori’s competence explains how he can respond to the train emergency; Momiji’s earlier kindness explains why serving and protecting her has become the work he chooses to do. His loyalty is connected to an encounter in which she was the one helping him.

Kazami recognizes an old classmate

After the case, Yuya Kazami tells Tooru Amuro that Iori resembles a classmate from the police academy. He recalls an exceptionally capable graduate who went into Zero, the same sphere of work as Amuro. Amuro has not personally met Iori, so this information comes through Kazami’s recognition.

The conversation adds a specific professional connection to the skills Iori has demonstrated. It does not need to establish an exact command rank to explain his ability to read a dangerous situation, recognize coordinated surveillance and cooperate quickly with the detectives.

The final call gives Amuro a new target

The final call gives Amuro a new target

Amuro enters an otherwise empty train carriage and answers a ringing phone. An elderly man on a neighboring train, carrying a cane with a hawk motif, orders him to investigate Conan thoroughly. The source of the order is distinct from the three operatives whose train crime has just been solved.

The man’s identity and wider purpose remain unconfirmed in this account. What is clear is the change in focus: Iori’s personal history and the USB case have received answers, while Conan himself is being made the subject of another investigation.

The contrast strengthens the ending. Heiji acts on the train, Conan decodes from elsewhere, Kazuha helps stop an operative and Iori protects Momiji; their cooperation brings the immediate danger under control. The gentle memory behind his loyalty then gives way to a call whose implications have only begun to emerge.
