This time, the story shifts to Ran, whose plans to meet Sonoko Suzuki take an alarming turn.

Detective Conan File 1167 Recap: Ran Gets Lost

The new case opens at the Mouri Detective Agency, where Ran is looking for hydrogen peroxide.

Sonoko is bringing a handkerchief stained by a nosebleed, and Ran wants to try using it to remove the stain. The bottle initially seems like an ordinary household item, but it becomes a crucial clue later in the chapter.

Ran Heads to the Wrong Station

While speaking to Sonoko on the phone, Ran discovers that she has confused Takeshiba Station with Takebashi Station.

The similar station names send her to the wrong place. After looking around for Sonoko, she ends up losing her way as well.

Ran cannot check a map app on the flip phone she is using. Sonoko suggests switching to a smartphone, but Ran does not want to give up this particular handset: it was a gift from Shinichi Kudo.

She tells Sonoko that she will run the roughly four kilometers from Takebashi to Tohto Tower, then ends the call.

Looking for Tohto Tower Leads Ran into an Old Building

Ran starts toward the tower, but the surrounding buildings block her view. To work out which direction to go, she decides to reach the roof of a nearby old building.

Inside, she finds an elevator and steps in. Its interior is covered in graffiti, and spray paint obscures the floor indicator.

She presses what she believes is the button for the highest floor. The elevator begins to climb, then suddenly stops.

Trapped in the Dark Elevator

The lights go out, leaving Ran trapped in darkness. She calls Sonoko to explain what has happened.

At first, she tries to think calmly about the rundown building and its vandalized elevator. Then an ominous creaking sound interrupts her thoughts.

The elevator shakes, and Ran hears noises that make her fear its cable could be giving way. She also drops her flip phone onto the floor.

In the darkness, with the elevator sounding increasingly unstable, Ran fears that it could fall at any moment.

A Call from Shinichi Reveals a Disturbing Clue

After hearing from Sonoko, Shinichi calls Ran’s flip phone just as she is close to despair.

She tells him that she is trapped and describes the sounds coming from the elevator. She also notices something reddish-black on her palm, resembling paint.

There is a smeared stain on the floor, with a shape that suggests a comb had once been lying in it.

Shinichi tells Ran to put some of the hydrogen peroxide she brought onto the stain. When she does, white bubbles appear.

From Ran’s description of the reaction, Shinichi concludes that the stain is a pool of blood rather than paint.

The discovery suggests that there may be more to this building than a faulty elevator. File 1167 ends here, leaving the mystery to continue in File 1168.

File 1167 Review and Theories

What makes this opening effective is how quickly an everyday mistake becomes frightening. Ran goes from mixing up station names to being trapped in an elevator, then discovers what Shinichi identifies as blood.

The chapter also makes good use of details introduced early on. Both the hydrogen peroxide and the phone Shinichi gave Ran become important once she is in danger.

The full case is still unclear. The immediate questions are what happened inside the elevator and how Shinichi can help Ran when he is somewhere else.

Could This Be the End of Ran’s Flip Phone?

Ran’s attachment to her old phone is one of the most interesting parts of this chapter.

While other characters have gradually moved to smartphones, she has continued using a flip phone. The 2022 film Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween also depicts her with one; that movie-only example is a separate reference, not evidence for what must happen in this manga case.

Her reluctance to replace it has an emotional basis. In the earlier aquarium case, Shinichi was responsible for her previous phone getting soaked and bought her a replacement. She has treasured his gift ever since.

That history makes her refusal to switch phones endearing. She is holding on to a reminder of Shinichi, rather than simply ignoring newer technology.

Here, however, that attachment also complicates her situation. Without a map app, she struggles to find her way; once inside the elevator, dropping the phone almost costs her a way to reach help.

The handset is both a keepsake and something she urgently needs to keep working. That gives its fate more weight than an ordinary broken-phone subplot.

The phone could be damaged during this case, perhaps finally leading Ran to replace it with a smartphone. That is a possibility, not an outcome confirmed by File 1167.

If she does let it go, the scene could say something meaningful about her relationship with Shinichi. For Ran, replacing this phone would mean parting with a gift she has protected for years.

A Case about Shinichi and Ran’s Connection?

I had expected the next case might return to the Black Organization, but this opening instead puts Ran and her relationship with Shinichi in the foreground.

His call arrives when she is almost overwhelmed. Even from a distance, he can organize the few details she gives him and suggest a way to investigate the stain.

Their connection is carried through the very phone she refuses to replace. Shinichi is the reason she has kept it, the person she can turn to in this crisis, and the one who recognizes the significance of what she finds.

The phone serves as both a reminder of their shared history and a lifeline during the case.

It is possible to read this renewed focus on the pair as groundwork for the 2027 film, but a direct connection is not confirmed. For now, that remains speculation about the series’ direction, not information established by the chapter.

Even without such a connection, the setup creates a strong way to explore their bond: Ran is alone in immediate danger, while Shinichi has to help through a phone call.

Can he locate the building and get her out? What will the bloodstain reveal? And will the phone survive the case? Those questions make this opening compelling as both a mystery and a story about the two of them.
