Spoilers for Conan File 1160, “Escape from the Zodiac Mansion”
The story opens with Conan, Ran, and Sonoko arriving at an escape game venue.
The game they are joining is a puzzle game called “Escape from the Zodiac Mansion.”
According to Ran, she originally planned to invite Shinichi Kudo (Jimmy Kudo) and Masumi Sera as well, but both of them sounded stuffed up and seemed to have colds, so she decided not to ask them.
Hearing that, Conan silently points out to himself that his own voice is nasal too.
As the Puzzle Game Moves Forward, They Find an Unsettling Scene
Conan and the others solve the first code in the game and head to the room marked with the zodiac card for the monkey.
Inside that room, they see a woman who appears to be hanging by the neck.
There is also a woman in a rabbit costume at the scene, panicking and calling out to Ms. Baba.
The escape game, which should have been fun, suddenly shifts into a deeply strange atmosphere.
Detective Chiba and Yumi Arrive
Detective Chiba is the one who arrives at the scene next.
He tries to call for forensics and preserve the scene, but Conan quickly notices that something is off.
At first glance it looks like a hanging, yet the woman’s feet are firmly touching the floor. Conan realizes that this is not a real hanging, but only a staged effect prepared for the escape game.
In other words, Detective Chiba jumped to the conclusion that a case had happened.
Yumi Miyamoto from the traffic division also comes to the venue. She starts calling Detective Sato to report what looks like a hanging, then notices Conan and the others and understands that it is part of the production.
It seems Detective Chiba came to the escape game with Naeko Miike, while Yumi came with Shukichi Haneda. Conan’s group learns that both couples happened to be taking part at the same venue.
Conan Solves the Zodiac Clue and Moves to the Next Room
Even while everyone around him is unsettled, Conan calmly keeps working through the game’s code. He figures out that the next zodiac sign points to the ox, and the group heads to that room.
The next instruction they find says, “Savor the wine carefully” (unofficial translation).
At another table, separate from Conan’s group, there are four other participants.
- Nukitaka Terui, a sommelier
- Someka Konno, a hall staff member
- Teisuke Onuki, a chef
- Yuito Tarusawa
These four seem to work at the same restaurant, and they apparently joined the escape game using tickets prepared by their manager.
The reason was Yuito Tarusawa, who had become isolated at work.
In the past, Yuito switched the contents of wine bottles, served cheaper wine to customers while passing it off as expensive wine, and then treated the incident like a joke.
Because Yuito was the manager’s son, he avoided any major punishment. With that background in place, the other restaurant staff members arrive at the game while carrying a complicated mood.
Right After the Wine Puzzle Is Solved, a New Case Occurs
Conan and the others split up to solve the puzzle and gather the needed items: wine, a corkscrew, a glass, and a coaster.
When they return to the table and are about to pour the wine, Conan notices that some letters have been carved into the underside of the cork. He uses grape juice to stamp it onto the coaster, and the character that appears indicates the sheep zodiac sign.
Immediately after they identify the next zodiac sign, a pained cry rings out from the neighboring table.
Conan and Detective Chiba rush over and find Yuito Tarusawa collapsed.
By the time they check him, they realize that he has already died.
The story continues in File 1161.
Characters in Conan File 1160, “Escape from the Zodiac Mansion”
The characters who appear in File 1160, “Escape from the Zodiac Mansion,” include Conan, Ran, Sonoko, Detective Chiba, Naeko Miike, Yumi Miyamoto, Shukichi Haneda, and the four restaurant-related participants.
The chapter especially brings Naeko and Shukichi into focus because of their connection to the two couples present at the escape game venue.
Impressions and Theories for Conan File 1160, “Escape from the Zodiac Mansion”
A new series starts with this chapter.
Since this chapter comes two days before the release of “Fallen Angel of the Highway” (tentative title), I first expected a story centered more directly on Chihaya, but the actual opening takes a fairly different route.
Because the core of the case has not been fully shown yet, the notes below focus on the points that stand out at this stage.
The Official Couples of Chiba and Naeko, and Shukichi and Yumi, Appear Together
The first thing worth noting is that two official Metropolitan Police-related couples appear in the same chapter.
- Detective Chiba and Naeko Miike
- Shukichi Haneda and Yumi Miyamoto
Seeing these two pairs at the same time feels like a fairly rare combination, and the source article notes that it has been a long time since the “Triple Collaboration’s Cheating Suspicion” story.
When thinking about why these characters appear here, the connection to “Fallen Angel of the Highway” (tentative title) is hard to ignore. Yumi and Naeko are characters connected to the upcoming movie, so it makes sense to give them a clear appearance before release.
Apart from the case itself, this chapter may be quietly important as a pre-movie look at the relationships on the Metropolitan Police side.
Conan and Sera’s Colds Still Feel Suspicious
One line near the beginning is hard to overlook: Ran says that Shinichi and Sera both sounded nasal.
It sounds like casual conversation, but because the line is deliberately included, it may not be only a simple status update. In other words, this case could end up involving those colds or those nasal voices in some way.
At this point, not all of the details at the scene have been revealed, so it is too early to be certain, but the illness detail could still work as a clue connected to Yuito’s collapse or to interactions inside the venue.
Masumi Sera is also a character appearing in the movie, so even having her name mentioned at this timing feels a little notable. The single line may matter both for the trick side of the case and as a bridge toward the film.
This Does Not Look Like a Main Plot Progression Chapter
My current impression is that this chapter probably is not one where the major long-running plot lines move forward, such as the Black Organization, Rum, Tsutomu Akai, or Tooru Amuro.
Of course, Detective Conan often hides later foreshadowing inside ordinary-looking cases, so it is too early to relax completely. Still, judging by the way File 1160 begins, the chapter feels more strongly like the following:
- pre-movie character positioning
- a chance to show the couple pairs
- the introduction to a relatively light case series
For that reason, it may be more natural to view this as a small connecting chapter before the movie, rather than a chapter where the Black Organization story advances dramatically.
That said, chapters like this are exactly where a throwaway line can later turn out to be foreshadowing, so the small details are still worth following closely.
The Next File 1161 Appears in Weekly Shonen Sunday Issue 20
The next chapter, Detective Conan File 1161, appears in Weekly Shonen Sunday issue 20, released on April 15, 2026.
Theories for File 1161, “Don’t Give Up,” focus on whether wine will be central to the next stage of the case.
For readers following the collected edition side as well, this story is also connected to the discussion around Volume 109 and its expected contents.
