Detective Conan Episode 1162: The Case of Ayumi's Illustrated Diary 5

Spoilers follow for the organizer of the vandalism and the attempted jewelry theft.

The Case of Ayumi’s Illustrated Diary 5, international episode 1220 (Japanese episode 1162), is an anime-original story. The mastermind is Aoi Inukai, the confectionery owner who has claimed to be a victim. The vandal Kogoro caught was acting under Inukai’s influence, and the damage was preparation for a jewelry-store theft that has not yet happened.

For her summer research project, Ayumi decides to make a documentary about the Mouri Detective Agency. She directs, Mitsuhiko is assistant director and Genta operates the camera. Haibara takes on continuity, editing and makeup, while Conan serves as executive producer and handles the lighting.

The subject is a series of vandalism incidents in Beika’s shopping district. Since Kogoro has already caught the person who carried them out, it looks like a safe case to reconstruct. The children intend to document a finished investigation, rather than enter an active one.

As the group interviews people again for the film, Conan notices inconsistencies. Ayumi’s illustrated diary also helps him reconsider the events. The renewed attention to what was said and recorded exposes a purpose that the vandal’s capture did not resolve.

Inukai has used another man to damage security cameras and other property while claiming to have been harmed by the incidents. In the episode’s explanation, the man was placed under hypnosis. The destruction is part of Inukai’s plan to target Kaneko Jewelry, not the complete objective of the crime.

That distinction explains why a solved vandalism case can still conceal an immediate danger. The person performing the destructive acts is not the organizer, and stopping him does not mean the organizer has abandoned the next stage. Conan realizes that the jewelry shop still needs protection.

Conan and the others keep watch. Inukai appears in person to steal from the jewelry shop, and the Detective Boys, Takagi and Chiba stop the theft. The attempted theft brings the hidden purpose of the earlier damage into the open.

Ayumi’s project has therefore changed from a record of Kogoro’s success into an opportunity to discover what remained unfinished. The diary and fresh interviews matter because they preserve observations that can be reconsidered when the first explanation proves incomplete.

The fifth installment gives each child a recognizable job and lets Ayumi’s creative project drive the plot. The production roles provide the playful opening, but they also create a natural reason to return to witnesses and revisit the account of a supposedly finished case.

The satisfying turn is that recording events requires the children to look at them again. Their film is not simply a celebration of an arrest. It makes room for the question that exposes Inukai: does the captured offender explain everything that the evidence shows?
