Detective Conan Episode 1202: I Cannot Lie to Archery

I Cannot Lie to Archery: The Arrow Angle and the Untouched Soup | Case Closed

Spoilers: This article reveals the culprit, method and motive of I Cannot Lie to Archery.

I Cannot Lie to Archery, Episode 1261 (Japanese episode 1202), is an anime-original case. Secretary Chinatsu Tachibana kills the chairman of Danjuro Foods at close range with an arrow, then makes the death resemble a shot from a distant rooftop. The arrows fired in a reconstruction and the state of the lunch she carries undo the deception.

Hearing sirens nearby, Conan and Kogoro reach the chairman’s residence. He is dead on the balcony with an archery arrow in his throat. The conspicuous weapon immediately suggests that someone fired at him from a distance.

Tachibana says she had been working with him but left to collect their ordered lunch. She returned with bibimbap and gomtang soup, discovered the body and dropped the food in surprise. Her account places her away from the balcony when the death supposedly occurred.

The company headquarters overlooks the residence, making its roof an apparent firing position. The chairman’s two sons were having lunch in the building, and both have won national archery competitions. Their ability, access and mutual suspicion make either brother seem a plausible attacker.

Each brother fires from the headquarters roof at a dummy placed on the balcony. Both hit the target. They do not deliberately conceal their skill, even though a successful shot appears to strengthen the suspicion against them.

The result supplies more than proof of accuracy. From that elevated position, both arrows enter the target at a downward angle. The arrow in the actual victim, by contrast, is almost horizontal. The reconstruction fails to reproduce the defining feature of the wound.

This comparison overturns the proposed rooftop attack. The brothers’ ability to hit a target does not make their shots match the evidence of this death. Their honest performance has exposed the flaw in a story built around their expertise.

The investigation must therefore return to someone close to the victim. An arrow can be used directly as a weapon without being fired from a bow. That change in premise matters more than finding an even more accomplished archer.

Conan also notices that the gomtang has not been warmed. It remains congealed among the food Tachibana says she was bringing for the chairman to eat. That state conflicts with the ordinary purpose of delivering his lunch.

In the reconstruction, she did not prepare the soup for him to eat because she already knew he was dead. Carrying and dropping the food helped create the appearance of a shocked discoverer returning from an errand. The meal supports her account visually while its condition undermines it.

The angle and the soup answer different questions. One challenges the distant firing position; the other challenges the secretary’s claimed ignorance of the death. Her work beside the chairman supplies the access needed for the close-range attack.

Speaking through Sleeping Kogoro, Conan identifies Tachibana. She stood in front of the chairman and stabbed him with the arrow, leaving it almost horizontal. She then collected the lunch and acted as though she had discovered a killing committed during her absence.

The rooftop’s position, the brothers’ competitive skill and their strained relationship supplied a ready alternative explanation. Their father had encouraged them to compete with each other, making their suspicion after his death an especially useful distraction for the killer.

Tachibana admits the crime and is taken away by police. The brothers are cleared of the murder, but the investigation has also shown how readily their rivalry can substitute for trust. Solving the killing does not settle that family conflict.

A long resentment rather than a new quarrel

A long resentment rather than a new quarrel

Tachibana’s parents had opened a restaurant on the chairman’s recommendation. The business failed, and both later took their own lives. She blamed him for their deaths and entered his company with revenge in mind, eventually becoming his secretary and waiting for an opportunity.

Her belief explains the target of her resentment, but the case does not establish the chairman’s exact responsibility for her parents’ deaths. Nor does it supply a new argument on the day as the trigger. The murder grows from a grievance she had carried while deliberately working her way close to him.

The family still has work to do after the case

The brothers offer Kogoro a position as the company’s consulting detective. Conan, still using Sleeping Kogoro’s voice, rejects the proposal while criticizing their continuing distrust. Being innocent of their father’s murder has not resolved how they treat one another.

Conan and Kogoro later return to an ordinary barbecue meal. That final change of setting provides a little relief after the revenge and family hostility. Food has served both as a decisive inconsistency at the scene and as a way back into everyday life.

The title is most effective in the brothers’ demonstration. Their determination to shoot honestly initially seems unhelpful to their defense, yet the accurate results expose the planted explanation. A spectacular skill and a quietly neglected bowl of soup converge on the same answer.
