Detective Conan Special: The Gold-Star Answer

The Gold-Star Answer: Cure Answer’s Identity and the False-Hideout Heist | Case Closed

Spoilers follow for the robbers, Cure Answer’s identity and the ending.

The convincing Cure Answer at the jewelry store is Kaito Kid in disguise. The robbers are the woman known as Phantom Thief Santos and a male accomplice who has infiltrated the store as its bodyguard. Their plan uses a false hideout to draw police away, but Ayumi Yoshida notices that the woman she followed is missing from the arrested group. That observation brings Conan back to the real crime.

The Gold-Star Answer is an anime-original special made for Detective Conan’s thirtieth television anniversary in collaboration with Star Detective Precure! International listings place it at Episode 1262. In the Japanese broadcast sequence, it falls between episodes 1202 and 1203 and has no regular Japanese episode number. This is a jewelry robbery case, with no murder victim.

The Detective Boys begin by watching Star Detective Precure!, and Ayumi is captivated by Cure Answer. News of serial jewelry robberies in Beika turns that excitement toward a real investigation: perhaps the kind of heroine she admires might appear. Her wish matters later because the robbers and Kid use the same heroine’s image for very different purposes.

The Precure side has its own companion collaboration, Star Detectives Assemble. The two programs are not consecutive halves of one crime story. Here, the focus stays on a jewelry heist, Ayumi’s admiration and Kid’s theatrical disguise; the collaboration does not introduce a new Black Organization or Rum development.

The next suspected target is Keita Kaneko’s jewelry store, where Misako Shindo’s jeweled work Pum-pum-pum-pum-pumpkin is on display. The Detective Boys begin watching the area. The Santos gang is known for committing robberies in other people’s disguises, so an apparently familiar appearance is no guarantee of a trustworthy identity.

The motive established here is theft of the displayed work. The story does not establish a personal revenge motive against Kaneko or the artist, the robbers’ private financial circumstances, or an exact valuation of the piece. Nor does it give a complete membership list for the wider gang. Those gaps should not be filled by treating everyone who appears at the hideout as an equal participant in the real heist.

Ayumi and Genta spot a suspicious woman and follow her. They hear information about a planned date and a hideout, apparently gaining a breakthrough through their own initiative. In fact, she has noticed them and deliberately lets them hear the information she wants carried back to the investigators.

That is the first warning sign on a second viewing. Someone involved in a guarded criminal plan seems unusually willing to discuss its time and base of operations within earshot. The children’s successful pursuit is not a lucky escape from the robbers’ attention; it is something the woman has built into the diversion.

The fake hideout offers an answer that is too convenient

Police raid the factory hideout and detain four people. Masks bearing the Santos gang’s name appear to confirm that they have found the robbers. With both suspects and conspicuous identifying objects in front of them, the danger to Kaneko’s store seems to have passed.

Ayumi notices the essential absence: the woman she and Genta followed is not among those four. Conan combines that observation with the detainees’ limited knowledge of the plan and the oddly obvious masks. A gang that disguises itself as other people to shift blame is leaving unusually direct evidence of its own identity.

The four are decoys, not the two people carrying out the store robbery. They have been placed there without knowing the full plan so that the police will believe they have caught the main group. The false information, the raid and the feeling of a solved case all serve the same purpose: moving police attention away from the actual target.

Ayumi’s role gives this reversal its force. She has been used by the woman, but she does not simply remain a child whose mistake Conan must repair. By remembering the person who led her there and checking who is missing, she supplies the observation that dismantles the apparent solution.

While police are occupied with the fake hideout, the man hired to protect Kaneko reveals that he is an accomplice. Disguised as Hanninda, he threatens Kaneko with a blade and takes the jeweled work. The plan does not depend on forcing entry from outside because one of its participants already holds a trusted position inside.

The female robber appears in a rough Cure Answer disguise. Santos is her criminal alias, not a disclosed real name; the male accomplice’s real name is also not given. Their roles are clear even though those personal identities remain unspecified.

Then another Cure Answer arrives, with a much more convincing appearance and performance. This figure is Kid. The reveal concerns his current disguise, rather than a first disclosure of Kid’s underlying identity or the arrival of the real Precure heroine at the robbery scene.

The contrast is about conduct as much as costume. Santos uses a beloved image while threatening people; Kid uses his skill to sustain the kind of heroic appearance Ayumi wants to believe in. Both figures are disguised, yet their actions give Ayumi’s admiration very different meanings.

Stopping Santos does not yet recover the stolen work

The female robber draws a gun as the confrontation turns against her. Conan incapacitates her with his tranquilizer dart, ending that immediate threat. Her male accomplice is still escaping with the artwork, however, so subduing one robber is only part of the resolution.

Conan and Kid then act together. Kid’s Card Gun and Conan’s soccer ball contribute to one coordinated attack that stops the fleeing man. The scene brings their familiar tools into the same action, allowing the rivals to read each other’s intentions without a lengthy discussion.

Both principal robbers are subdued, and Pum-pum-pum-pum-pumpkin is returned to Kaneko. He survives the threat, and there is no murder to solve. The four people detained at the false hideout remain distinct from the two who attacked the store; catching the latter and recovering the work completes what the earlier raid only appeared to achieve.

Kid’s departure preserves the rivals’ usual distance

Kid’s departure preserves the rivals’ usual distance

Kid does not keep the recovered piece. He leaves before police arrive, ending the temporary cooperation on his own theatrical terms. The case does not establish a permanent alliance with Conan. They share a purpose long enough to defeat the robbers, then leave room for their familiar pursuit to resume.

That restraint is part of the pleasure of their teamwork. The special shows how well two opponents can understand one another’s abilities without changing the basic relationship that made the partnership interesting. The coordinated finish is brief, confident and recognizably theirs.

For Ayumi, the happiness attached to Cure Answer’s appearance is not erased by the disguise. Kid’s care as a performer gives the scene a kindness that Santos’s costume lacks. The special lets a false image carry a sincere gesture, while still requiring Conan to expose false evidence in the crime itself.

On a rewatch, the most rewarding details are the woman’s conspicuous conversation, the too-obvious masks, the people who do not understand the plan and the missing face Ayumi remembers. Those clues turn a bright anniversary collaboration into a case with its own reversal, and give the children a real part in bringing it to the right ending.
