Why does Haibara’s behavior around Rumi Wakasa matter?
File 1163 turns a stop at a FUSAE jewelry store into a hostage situation. Conan spots an accomplice among the supposed captives and begins fighting back. Away from the robbery’s immediate danger, two developments stand out: Agasa and Fusae are keeping in touch, and Haibara approaches Wakasa rather than avoiding her. The first brings warmth; the second leaves her motive open.
File 1163, A Gift From Ms. Kobayashi, was published in Weekly Shonen Sunday issue 30 on June 24, 2026. The case and character analysis below reflect what this chapter reveals, without using later chapters to settle its open questions.
From a takoyaki party to a shop that feels wrong
Conan, Ai Haibara, Professor Agasa, and the Detective Boys are returning from buying ingredients for a takoyaki party at Agasa’s house. They notice Sumiko Kobayashi and Rumi Wakasa inside a FUSAE brand jewelry store and stop there.
Kobayashi is choosing pearl cufflinks as a gift for Inspector Shiratori. The scene initially presents ordinary plans and small signs of affection. Haibara can even speak jokingly about the danger of the Black Organization finding them. That lightness makes the change in atmosphere more effective.
Conan notices that the person serving them does not know about dimples in pearls. He also checks the shop’s online crowd information: it reports roughly three times the usual crowd despite the relatively small number of people visible.
Neither detail belongs in a comfortable shopping scene. Together they make Conan question what is happening inside the store.
Before he can contact the police, a man with a knife takes Agasa hostage. Another man appears, and the group is restrained with cable ties. The casual stop has become a robbery.
What the robbers are waiting for
The group is confined in a back room with three people who appear to be the real employees. The apparent shop staff out front were part of the robbery. The robbers appear to be a five-person gang that has taken over the store.
Their target is not simply the jewelry on display. They are waiting for a wealthy customer expected at 4 p.m., carrying children’s leather goggles decorated with jewels worth a total of 100 million yen.
That waiting makes the situation more threatening. This is a planned interception, and the hostages are trapped while the robbers wait for the item to arrive.
The robbers also intend to spread gasoline before escaping. If they set the building on fire, the hostages could be left inside. The chapter leaves that threat hanging over the captives.
How Conan finds an accomplice among the captives
Conan jumps to look through the glass above the door and check for a guard. He accidentally touches a switch, briefly turning off the lights. After switching them back on, he behaves as though he has given up.
That apparent surrender does not last. He addresses one of the men presented as an employee, then uses the Stun-Gun Wristwatch to put him to sleep.
The man is another accomplice, not a genuine employee held alongside them. During the blackout, Conan had noticed that he possessed one of the confiscated phones. The momentary darkness supplied the clue.
The payoff is satisfying because the interruption was not just a piece of action. It changed what Conan could observe, and his changed behavior concealed the next move. He frees himself from the cable tie and begins releasing the others.
The chapter closes with Conan beginning to turn the situation around. The robbery remains the immediate problem, but the captives are no longer simply waiting to be rescued.
Agasa and Fusae: the warmest development is a small one
Agasa and Fusae Campbell are now corresponding by email. Haibara repeatedly contacted the FUSAE flagship store so that they could get in touch.
The confirmed development is continuing contact, not a completed romance. After the lingering first-love story associated with Ginkgo-Colored First Love, even this modest step carries weight.
That is the welcome development here: a relationship left with a bittersweet aftertaste has not simply disappeared. There is still a connection.
Haibara’s involvement gives the development another layer. Her concern for Agasa appears through practical help, rather than a large declaration. That restraint suits her, and it is what makes the gesture feel warm.
The setting may give the series room to revisit Agasa and Fusae further. Choosing a FUSAE store for this new case and revealing their contact at the same time makes that possibility especially inviting. But File 1163 alone does not promise that they will become a couple. For now, an email connection is enough to make the old first-love story feel a little less distant.
Why Haibara approaches Wakasa instead of avoiding her
Haibara heads toward the shop before the others and is seen talking with Wakasa. Conan’s reaction also makes the encounter worth noticing.
There is more than one possible reading of Haibara’s approach. Interest in the FUSAE store is an ordinary explanation, especially given her role in connecting Agasa and Fusae. It should not be discarded just because a more dramatic interpretation is available.
The uneasy alternative comes from Wakasa’s background. She has been revealed as Asaka, and she appears to carry strong feelings toward Elena Miyano, Haibara’s mother. Wakasa may also suspect Haibara is Shiho Miyano. The chapter does not confirm that suspicion.
Haibara often reacts warily to danger associated with the Organization. Here she moves closer, and Conan looks puzzled by the encounter. Why approach someone whose connection to her past may be so complicated?
Perhaps Haibara does not regard Wakasa as wholly dangerous. Perhaps she senses danger and approaches anyway. The chapter does not settle her motive.
Her interest in the store is understandable. Her decision to approach Wakasa is the more intriguing part. Conan’s puzzled reaction makes that choice worth watching, even though File 1163 does not yet explain it.
Where this chapter leaves the story
Conan has found a way to act, but Haibara’s motive remains open. The robbery supplies the immediate tension. Agasa and Fusae’s correspondence gives this opening chapter a warmer thread, while Haibara’s conversation with Wakasa leaves an uneasier one running beside it.
