The robbery case at the Fusae Brand jewelry store began in the previous file.
File 1163, “The Teacher’s Gift,” was a surprising chapter that updated the relationship between Fusae Campbell and Professor Agasa after several decades.
This time, Conan Edogawa and the others are trapped inside the jewelry store and begin preparing a counterattack. By the very end, the file becomes especially important because it touches on Rumi Wakasa.
From here on, this article covers spoilers and analysis for Detective Conan File 1164, “Deadly Pranks,” published in Weekly Shonen Sunday issue 31, released on July 1, 2026.
Spoilers for Conan File 1164, “Deadly Pranks”
The story begins with Conan and the others captured by the robbers at the Fusae Brand jewelry store and confined in the back room.
Inside the room are Detective Kobayashi, Rumi Wakasa, Professor Agasa, Ai Haibara, the three Detective Boys, Conan, the real employees, and one of the culprits whom Conan has already knocked out.
At the end of File 1163, Conan saw through the culprit disguised as an employee and put him to sleep with his wristwatch tranquilizer gun.
From this point, Conan’s side begins to strike back.
The Culprit Group Has Five Members
After hearing from the real store clerks, Conan’s group learns that the robbers are a five-person team.
The culprits came to the jewelry store, used stun guns to knock the employees unconscious, and took over the shop. On top of that, one extra culprit slipped into the back room while pretending to be an employee.
Their target is a pair of leather goggles decorated with jewels worth a total of 100 million yen, which a wealthy customer is scheduled to bring in for repairs around 4 p.m.
However, the room where Conan and the others are locked up has its own problem.
The inside doorknob has been removed, so they cannot simply open the door. On top of that, the sleeping culprit’s smartphone is still on an active call.
If that call is cut off in an unnatural way, the culprits outside may notice something is wrong and come to check.
Conan and the others have to break through this situation without letting the remaining robbers realize what is happening.
Conan Prepares Pranks for the Counterattack
For the counterattack, Conan’s group uses the items they bought for a takoyaki party at Professor Agasa’s house.
They do not have anything that looks like a proper weapon, but Conan starts turning the materials at hand into traps that can stall the culprits.
Using straws and paper cartons, he prepares a jack-in-the-box style trick.
For the door with the missing knob, he also works out a way to open it from the inside by using the temple of a pair of glasses.
Then he stretches tape from one side of the bottom of the doorway to the other, creating a trap that can catch the feet of a culprit who comes in.
Conan prepares three “pranks” in total, all built from ordinary objects rather than special equipment.
That connection between everyday items and a life-or-death counterattack is what makes the title, “Deadly Pranks,” land so neatly here.
Three Pranks Are Not Enough to Subdue Everyone
The problem, however, is the number of culprits.
Conan has prepared three traps, but the group outside the back room has five members.
He has already used the wristwatch tranquilizer gun, so his remaining options are limited.
At best, this plan may only take down about two of them.
They still do not have enough force to guarantee that every culprit can be restrained.
That is why Conan is thinking about Rumi Wakasa, also known as Asaka.
Wakasa has physical ability and judgment that are hard to believe for an ordinary teacher. From Conan’s point of view, she may be the strongest person in the room.
The question is whether Wakasa will move the way Conan wants her to. Conan cannot fully read that part, so he remains cautious.
Rumi Wakasa Notices Conan’s Naivete
Meanwhile, Wakasa is calmly reading the situation too.
Ayumi notices that Wakasa has a frightening look on her face and asks what is wrong. Wakasa dodges the question out loud, but inside she is thinking something very different.

Wakasa senses the danger in Conan’s plan.
She also identifies the most dangerous element among the robbers: the leader’s credit-card-sized handgun, a 22 WMR.
Even in that situation, Wakasa stays remarkably composed.
Two or three people may be shot and lose their lives. Still, she cannot afford to die here.
As Wakasa tries to accept that cold calculation, the figures of Koji Haneda and Amanda, who died seventeen years ago, appear in her mind.
For Wakasa, this is not only about the robbery in front of her. In order to keep pursuing the case from seventeen years ago, she cannot fall here.
Then Wakasa makes up her mind.

Immediately after that, Ai Haibara grabs Wakasa’s clothes.
Ai Haibara: “No, teacher… don’t go that way… don’t!!!” (unofficial translation)
Haibara seems to realize that Wakasa is about to move in a dangerous direction.
Wakasa’s icy resolve and Haibara’s attempt to stop her stand in sharp contrast.
File 1164 ends not only with Conan’s counterattack preparations, but also with the atmosphere around Haibara and Rumi Wakasa suddenly becoming much more unsettling.
Thoughts and Analysis on Conan File 1164, “Deadly Pranks”
At first, this chapter looks like it will simply be about how Conan and the others will fight back against the robbers.
By the final pages, though, the mood changes completely.
Rumi Wakasa starts moving with possible sacrifices in mind, and Ai Haibara reaches out to stop her. That shift makes File 1164 feel less like a simple setup chapter and more like a key step into the relationship between Wakasa and Haibara.
The immediate jewelry store robbery overlaps with Wakasa’s resentment over the case from seventeen years ago. Because those two layers come together, the next file suddenly feels much more important.
From here, I will organize my impressions of File 1164 and look at the points that may matter from File 1165 onward.
File 1164 Thoughts and Analysis 1: A Hint About Ai Haibara’s Feelings Toward Wakasa
The scene that stands out most in File 1164 is Ai Haibara trying to stop Rumi Wakasa.
One of the bigger mysteries around Wakasa has been that Haibara has not shown open hostility toward her.
Wakasa appears to suspect that Haibara may be Shiho Miyano. If we also consider the possibility that Rumi Wakasa is Asaka and that she may have complicated feelings toward Elena Miyano, she is someone Haibara would normally have every reason to watch carefully.
Even so, Haibara does not seem to avoid Wakasa. If anything, she sometimes seems concerned about her.
This ending feels like it gives us a glimpse of why.
Wakasa recognizes the robbers’ gun and is prepared to prioritize her own survival even if some people are sacrificed. Behind that is the resolve of Rumi Wakasa, who continues to carry the deaths of Koji Haneda and Amanda from seventeen years ago.
But that resolve is extremely dangerous.
If she keeps going this way, Wakasa may stop being a teacher who protects the children and become someone willing to accept sacrifices in order to reach RUM.
That is why Haibara’s line hits so hard.

Haibara may understand to some degree that Wakasa is not an ordinary person.
Even then, she does not want Wakasa to fall completely to the dangerous side. She may feel that Wakasa can still return as “teacher.” That emotion seems to come through in this one line.
Haibara herself was once connected to the Black Organization. Because of that, she may understand instinctively where someone standing in darkness can reach a point of no return.
If the children or Detective Kobayashi are sacrificed in this incident, Rumi Wakasa may no longer be able to return as a teacher.
What Haibara is trying to stop may not be only the danger to people’s lives. It may also be Wakasa’s heart crossing fully into revenge.
File 1164 strongly suggests that Haibara’s view of Rumi Wakasa will become an important thread from here.
File 1164 Thoughts and Analysis 2: Wakasa Calling Conan “That Child” Is Interesting
Another line in Rumi Wakasa’s inner monologue also stands out.
Rumi Wakasa: “Reckless… that child seems sharp, but the finishing touch is too weak.” (unofficial translation)
What is striking here is that Wakasa does not think of Conan as “Shinichi Kudo (Jimmy Kudo)” or even as “Conan Edogawa,” but as “that child.”
Since this is internal narration, it is not wording chosen for someone else to hear. That makes it feel close to Wakasa’s honest way of seeing him.
To Rumi Wakasa, Conan may be a sharp child, but not yet someone she can trust completely or leave everything to.
More than that, even if Conan is an important piece for approaching RUM and the Black Organization, Wakasa may still see him as somewhere between “a child to protect” and “someone useful.”
That distance is bitter because Wakasa recognizes Conan’s deduction skills while still judging his plan as naive.
At the same time, she is prepared to accept some sacrifices for the sake of her own goal. That is where Rumi Wakasa’s frightening side appears.
This scene also calls back to the moment when Wakasa threw away the four-leaf clover she received from Ayumi.
That earlier scene showed the sharp gap between the warmth and coldness inside Wakasa. She can behave like a teacher with the children, but when she turns toward revenge, she becomes severely calculating.
The same kind of distance can be felt in the way she calls Conan “that child.”
She does not seem to see Conan as a complete ally. Instead, she draws a line between him and her own objective. That separation feels very much like Wakasa, and it is also a little sad.
However, Haibara stepping in may change Wakasa’s thinking.
Will Haibara’s “don’t” reach Wakasa, or will Wakasa push through with her own method for the sake of revenge?
From File 1165 onward, the fight against the robbers is not the only thing to watch. Which direction Rumi Wakasa’s heart leans may become just as important.

Detective Conan File 1165, “Lonely Malice,” is scheduled for Weekly Shonen Sunday issue 32, released on July 8, 2026.
File 1164 ends with the counterattack still ahead and with Wakasa’s state of mind exposed more clearly than before.
The next file should show whether Conan’s pranks, Haibara’s warning, and Wakasa’s resolve can coexist in one plan, or whether the situation will split apart even further.
