File 1165 turned into an unexpectedly important chapter, because it showed how Ai Haibara feels about Rumi Wakasa.
In File 1166, the case finally moves into its solution part.
From here on, this article discusses spoilers, impressions, and theory points for Detective Conan File 1166, “Ms. Wakasa’s Requital,” published in Weekly Shonen Sunday issue 33 on July 8, 2026.
Spoilers for Detective Conan File 1166, “Ms. Wakasa’s Requital”
The story begins inside the Fusae Brand jewelry store.
The robbers receive a message from the expected customer saying that arrival will be delayed by about ten minutes, so they wait for the goggles worth 100 million yen to be brought in.
However, they lose contact with the accomplice who should be in the back room. One member of the group heads over to check what happened.
That is where Conan and the others begin their counterattack.
The Culprit Group Heads Toward the Storage Area
Conan has made a plan to lure the five robbers he knows about into the back room one by one, then take them down in order.
The first robber opens the door, catches his foot on a trap, and falls over. Conan then uses a stun device to knock him unconscious.
Next, a female accomplice comes to see what happened.
She is startled by a jack-in-the-box trick disguised as a lunch box, and when she freezes, Conan puts her to sleep with the stun device.
After that, two more robbers notice that something is wrong and come over at the same time.
Conan takes one down with a soccer ball, while Rumi Wakasa knocks the other unconscious with an elbow strike.
At that point, the only person left should be the leader with the handgun.
Only the Leader Should Be Left, But…
The leader is waiting outside the door with a handgun ready.
Conan tells Rumi Wakasa that the gun takes time to reload after firing one shot. He says he will make the leader fire once first, and asks her to defeat him during that opening.
Rumi Wakasa wonders how Conan noticed the gun’s characteristics, but she still goes along with his plan.
Conan kicks a toothpick through the air, and the startled leader instinctively fires one shot.
Once Conan succeeds in making him waste the bullet, he signals Rumi Wakasa to take the leader down.
But there is one more culprit hidden nearby, someone Conan and the others had not accounted for.
Rumi Wakasa Is Cornered
Just when it seems as if Rumi Wakasa will defeat the leader and end the fight, an unexpected man appears from behind.
The man is a highly skilled killer, and he wraps both arms around Rumi Wakasa’s neck.
Meanwhile, the leader regains his confidence and points the handgun at Conan.
Conan kicks the gun away and breaks it, but the leader then grabs an ice pick and attacks Conan instead.
Detective Kobayashi rushes forward and tries to shield Conan with her own body.
But just before the ice pick can stab her, Rumi Wakasa catches the blade with her left hand.
After defeating the killer, Rumi Wakasa leaves the ice pick stuck in her left hand, grabs the leader’s face with her right hand, and slams him into the floor. With that, she subdues the final opponent in the back room.
The robbers in the back room are all defeated.
The Customer with the Jewels Arrives
The item targeted by the robbers is a pair of goggles decorated with jewels worth a total of 100 million yen.
However, one accomplice is still left at the front of the store.
The customers who arrive with the goggles turn out to be Sonoko Suzuki and Jirokichi Suzuki.
The remaining culprit tries to go after them, but Makoto Kyogoku, who is accompanying them as a bodyguard, takes him down.
On top of that, the goggles were not even meant for a human.
The 100-million-yen jeweled goggles had been prepared for Jirokichi’s beloved dog, Lupin (dog).
After that, the police arrive, and the jewelry-store robbery is safely resolved.
Rumi Wakasa’s left hand is injured from stopping the ice pick, and Detective Kobayashi asks if she is all right.
Rumi Wakasa answers this way.
Rumi Wakasa: “…Besides, I owed Detective Kobayashi one… This much is nothing!” (unofficial translation)
Rumi Wakasa is thinking back to the time when she dragged Detective Kobayashi into danger.
Until now, Rumi Wakasa seemed willing to accept a certain amount of sacrifice if it helped her reach her goal. This time, however, she protected Detective Kobayashi and Conan even though it meant getting hurt herself.
By repaying her debt to Detective Kobayashi and responding to Haibara’s wish, the ending shows that Rumi Wakasa’s heart has shifted slightly, which ties directly into the title “Ms. Wakasa’s Requital.”
Impressions and Theories for Detective Conan File 1166, “Ms. Wakasa’s Requital”
This chapter was the solution part of the robbery case set at the Fusae Brand jewelry store.
Across the four-part run from File 1163 to File 1166, it was rare to see this much focus placed on Rumi Wakasa’s inner state. The battle with the robbers matters, but what stays with me more is the way Haibara’s feelings seem to influence Rumi Wakasa’s choice.
The chapter has the satisfying energy of a case being solved, but it also leaves a warmer aftertaste at the end.
From here, I will look back over File 1166 with impressions and theory points.
File 1166 Impression and Theory 1: Rumi Wakasa’s Heart Has Changed
The part that hit hardest in File 1166 was the slight change in Rumi Wakasa’s way of thinking.
In File 1164, Rumi Wakasa seemed ready to tell herself that some sacrifices could not be helped if she was going to survive and fulfill her goal. Because she carries the case from 17 years ago and her revenge against RUM, she was close to prioritizing her objective over the lives in front of her.
But in File 1165, Ai Haibara grabs Rumi Wakasa’s clothes and silently begs her not to cross over to that side.
Because that feeling reached her, this time Rumi Wakasa appears to choose a method that does not sacrifice anyone.
Most importantly, Rumi Wakasa catches the ice pick with her own left hand to protect Detective Kobayashi and Conan. A character who once seemed ready to accept casualties now chooses to get hurt herself in order to protect someone else.
That does not mean her desire for revenge has completely disappeared. Even so, it is clear that Rumi Wakasa’s heart has moved one step toward the brighter side.
Her final line shows that change as well.

Rumi Wakasa must have remembered that she previously put Detective Kobayashi in danger in her place.
Instead of ending with “a sacrifice could not be helped,” she pays back that debt through her own action. That connection to the title “Ms. Wakasa’s Requital” made the ending especially moving.
File 1166 Impression and Theory 2: Sonoko Suzuki and Makoto Kyogoku Make a Great Punch Line
The arrival of Sonoko Suzuki and Jirokichi Suzuki instantly loosens the tension of the case.
The setup had described child-sized goggles being brought in by a wealthy customer, so I did not expect Sonoko and the others to appear.
Even better, the goggles decorated with 100 million yen in jewels were actually meant for Jirokichi’s beloved dog, Lupin (dog).
The reveal that the robbers risked everything for dog goggles feels exactly like the kind of extravagant joke Jirokichi Suzuki would bring into the story. The case itself was genuinely dangerous, so the gap created by that absurd use of the treasure works well.
And on top of that, Makoto Kyogoku is standing in front of the last robber.
The culprit has no real chance at that point.
While Conan and the others were desperately setting traps in the back room, and while Rumi Wakasa was fighting even after being injured, one of the strongest people in the series was waiting near the entrance. That slightly deflating but satisfying ending feels very Detective Conan.
File 1166 Impression and Theory 3: No Progress with Fusae
The one thing that felt a little disappointing was that there was no further progress in the relationship between Professor Agasa and Fusae Campbell.
File 1163 revealed that the two of them are currently email friends.
It is already nice to know that Professor Agasa and Fusae are still connected after so much time has passed since the ginkgo-colored first love story. Still, because this case took place at a Fusae Brand jewelry store, I wanted to see one more step forward.
Even a worried message from Fusae after the incident, or Professor Agasa reporting what happened, would have shown a little more of their current distance.
If Fusae herself had appeared and reunited with Professor Agasa, that would have been even harder for fans to resist.
That said, the reveal that they are email friends may itself be a new seed for the future.
The story did not go as far as a reunion this time, but it is meaningful that their connection has not been cut off. The next time Fusae Brand appears, I will be hoping for a warmer development with Professor Agasa.

That means there is a break before the next manga chapter arrives.
