Who Is Saguru Hakuba? Identity, Kaitou Kid, and Detective Rivals | Case Closed

Who Is Saguru Hakuba? Identity, Kaitou Kid, and Detective Rivals

Spoilers: Magic Kaito; Detective Conan manga through Volume 105; the corresponding anime through international episodes 1252–1253 (Japanese episodes 1193–1194). The movie section separately discusses The Private Eyes’ Requiem.

Who is Saguru Hakuba, and is he actually Kaitou Kid?

What does he know about Kid’s and Conan’s identities?

Saguru Hakuba is a real high school detective who pursues Kaitou Kid. He is not Kid himself. The confusion comes from a movie in which Kid takes his appearance—and from how closely the real Hakuba stands to Kaito Kuroba’s secret.

These are different questions. Hakuba’s suspicions about Kid’s identity in Magic Kaito do not establish that he knows Conan is Shinichi Kudo. Keeping that distinction clear makes his role much easier to follow.

The detective sitting beside the thief

Saguru Hakuba Is a High School Detective from Magic Kaito

Hakuba comes from Magic Kaito, the series centered on Kaitou Kid. He is 17, has returned from Britain, and attends Class 2-B at Ekoda High School with Kaito Kuroba. His father is Superintendent General Hakuba; his mother is British.

Those facts explain his background. The classroom explains his appeal.

The detective chasing Kid shares a classroom with him. Their ordinary school life sits right beside the contest between detective and thief. Hakuba can watch Kaito as a classmate and test him as a suspect; a conversation at school can carry a second meaning. That closeness gives their encounters a tension quite different from a detective arriving at an unfamiliar crime scene.

In Magic Kaito, Hakuba strongly suspects that Kaito is Kid.

Identifying a likely suspect and catching him are different achievements. Hakuba is portrayed as wanting to capture Kid himself and settle the contest as a detective. Simply naming a suspect would not give that rivalry the same resolution. The pursuit itself matters to him.

Does Hakuba know Conan is Shinichi?

The evidence discussed here does not establish that Hakuba knows Conan is Shinichi Kudo. He does notice important aspects of Conan’s cooperation with Kid. That is a narrower discovery.

In Volume 105, adapted as Kid VS Hakuba: The Azure Throne (Part 1) and (Part 2), Kid disguises himself as Shinichi. Conan and Kid cooperate as the case develops. Hakuba examines the supposed Shinichi’s behavior and moves toward recognizing Conan’s role in directing Kid.

This is where Hakuba becomes especially interesting. A disguise is already risky; Conan helping to sustain it introduces another secret for Hakuba to examine. His observations put pressure on both of them.

But noticing that Conan is directing the person disguised as Shinichi does not, by itself, solve Conan’s identity. Nor does it mean Hakuba understands every part of their arrangement. The scene shows him noticing their cooperation; it does not establish that he has uncovered Conan’s secret. That is enough to make the exchange tense. Conan and Kid are trying to keep the disguise working while Hakuba watches the gaps between what they say and what they do.

For anime viewers, this is international episodes 1252–1253, Japanese episodes 1193–1194. The distinction matters when searching for the case under different episode numbering systems.

Why the movie makes Hakuba look like Kid

Is Saguru Hakuba Kaitou Kid? The Movie Explanation

Movie spoilers: The Private Eyes’ Requiem. This section concerns a movie-specific impersonation.

The person appearing as Hakuba in The Private Eyes’ Requiem is Kaitou Kid in disguise. The real Hakuba remains a separate person.

That reveal can understandably confuse someone meeting Hakuba through the movie first. The audience sees a detective with Hakuba’s appearance, then has to reinterpret his participation once the disguise is revealed.

There is a pleasing reversal here: the detective who pursues Kid becomes the identity Kid borrows. Familiarity with Hakuba makes the disguise convincing, then makes the reveal change how the earlier scenes feel.

This is evidence about that movie appearance. It does not redefine the real Hakuba as Kid throughout Magic Kaito or Detective Conan.

Where Hakuba appears—and why his absences are misleading

Hakuba is alive in the material covered here. Infrequent appearances are not evidence that he died. His return in Volume 105 and its anime adaptation answers that question directly.

Saguru Hakuba Is Alive and Has Returned in the Anime

His major Detective Conan appearances discussed in this article are:

Saguru Hakuba's Anime Appearances and Return
  • Volume 30 and international episodes 235–238, Japanese episode 219: The Gathering of the Detectives! Shinichi Kudo vs. Kaitou Kid (2 Hour Special), set at the Twilight Mansion.
  • International episodes 519–522, Japanese episode 479: Three Days with Heiji Hattori (2 Hour Special), including the detective competition.
  • Volume 105 and international episodes 1252–1253, Japanese episodes 1193–1194: Kid VS Hakuba: The Azure Throne (Part 1) and (Part 2).

He generally appears when Kid or a gathering of detectives makes his particular role relevant. He does not need to be present at every ordinary case to remain an active character.

His rarity also gives an appearance weight. When he arrives in a Kid story, escape suddenly feels less comfortable. A detective familiar with Kaito’s methods is now watching.

Hakuba, Shinichi, and Heiji: similar roles, different pressure

Saguru Hakuba's Relationships with Shinichi Kudo and Heiji Hattori

Shinichi is associated with the East and Heiji with the West. Hakuba belongs alongside them as another high school detective, but his defining narrative connection is his pursuit of Kaitou Kid.

The detective competition brings Hakuba and Heiji together. Their temperaments make the contrast readable: Heiji is expressive and forceful, while Hakuba tends to observe and test with greater restraint. They are peers without being interchangeable.

Hakuba’s connection with Shinichi often runs through Kid. In The Azure Throne, someone who looks like Shinichi is actually the thief Hakuba is investigating. The face, the disguise, and Conan’s involvement need to be kept separate.

That arrangement is more revealing than treating all three detectives as versions of the same character. Hakuba brings the pressure of someone who knows the thief personally—and still wants the satisfaction of catching him.

Is there evidence that Hakuba belongs to the Black Organization?

Is Saguru Hakuba a Mastermind? His Connection to the Black Organization

No confirmed connection is established in the material discussed here, and it does not support identifying him as a mastermind.

His composure, limited appearances, and involvement in the ominous Twilight Mansion case may invite suspicion. Those qualities can explain why a theory appeals to readers; they are not proof of a hidden allegiance.

His established role is on the detective side of the conflict with Kid. Redirecting that role into an unsupported mastermind theory loses what makes him compelling in the first place.

The stronger question is already there: how far will a detective who strongly suspects Kaito push the pursuit? Hakuba does not need a secret villain role for his presence to make a Kid case feel dangerous.
