This article focuses specifically on File 1162, “The Detective on Our Side,” and the resolution of the case that began in File 1160.

Spoilers for Conan File 1162, “The Detective on Our Side”
This chapter is the solution part of the case at the escape game venue that had continued since File 1160.
The victim is Yuito Tarusawa, a pastry chef working at a restaurant. The suspects are three coworkers from the same restaurant.
- Nukitaka Terui, the sommelier
- Someka Konno, the floor staff member
- Teisuke Oiso, the chef
To lay out the sequence before Tarusawa drank the poisoned grape juice: Oiso first found the glasses and coasters, Terui then brought the bottle, and Konno opened the cork and poured grape juice into everyone’s glasses.
The central issue is still that the container for the poison cannot be found anywhere inside the venue.
That missing container is what keeps the case complicated until the very end.
A Tattooed Man Appears and Rushes the Case Along
Amid all this, a man separate from the three suspects appears with a tattoo on his neck: a skull pierced by a sword. He presses Detective Sato to wrap things up quickly, saying the commotion is probably just part of the escape game’s presentation.
The man’s appearance makes the atmosphere at the scene even more unsettled, but Conan and the others have no room to focus on that.
At this point, the urgent task is solving the poisoning trick in front of them.
Conan and Shukichi Give a Hint About “Jijinba”
Here, Conan brings up the shogi term “jijinba” to Detective Chiba. When Shukichi explains the meaning, it refers to a piece that once entered the opponent’s camp, became a horse, and then returned to its own camp.
The idea is “go in once, then come back,” and that becomes the conceptual clue for the trick.
While giving that explanation, Conan directs attention toward the red wine bottle. He also drops hints about whether someone has a plastic bag, and about how a stain near a detective badge could be hidden simply by shifting the badge’s position.
Those hints push Detective Chiba close enough that he can take the final step himself.
Detective Chiba’s Deduction Show Begins
Detective Chiba focuses on Terui’s belongings as the strangest point in the case.
Terui has a wallet, a smartphone, a handkerchief, four pencils with erasers, and one separate eraser.
At first glance, none of that seems unusual.
However, despite having bought so many small items, there is no plastic bag, the very thing he normally would have received with them.
From that, Chiba reasons that Terui must have used the plastic bag in the crime.
How Was the Poison Added?
Detective Chiba’s reconstruction of the trick is detailed and satisfying.
First, Terui places an eraser on the bottom of the bottle. Next, he stands a pencil on the head of the cork with the eraser side facing upward. By striking that eraser part with a rubber hammer, he drops the cork into the bottle.
Then he uses the plastic bag by blowing air into it, putting it into the bottle, and pulling out the cork he dropped. This is the “jijinba” idea Conan and Shukichi were pointing toward.
It goes in once, then comes back out. That sequence lets him tamper with the inside of the bottle.
After that, he adds the poison and makes the bottle look as if nothing happened.
Terui most likely performed this preparation in the restroom.
Where Did the Poison Container Go?
The problem of the missing poison container is also resolved.
When water is poured into the deodorizing beads in the restroom, the container hidden inside them appears. Terui had hidden the poison container there after using it.
Even worse for him, the plastic bag used in the trick is still left inside that container, making it decisive evidence.
Finally, when Terui’s sommelier badge is shifted, a grape juice stain is found beneath it. That small trace becomes crucial proof that Terui tampered with the bottle.
The Motive Was a Traffic Accident in Front of the Restaurant
Terui’s motive comes from a traffic accident that previously happened in front of the restaurant. The person who died in that accident was Terui’s fiancee, Reiko Hojo.
Terui had invited Reiko and her father to the restaurant. But at that time, Tarusawa opened wine that he had swapped from an expensive bottle to a cheap one.
After drinking it, Reiko’s father got into a taxi and angrily said that he had been served cheap liquor and that the person responsible could not be trusted.
When Reiko heard that and tried to check, she opened the door on the roadway side and was struck by a car coming from behind.
In other words, to Terui, Tarusawa was also the person who destroyed his fiancee’s life. This poisoning is the result of resentment that had built up from that tragedy.
The Final Wrap-Up Is an Unexpected Arrest on Another Case
After the case is solved, the tattooed man from the beginning appears again. At that moment, Detective Chiba realizes the man is the culprit behind a purse-snatching case in Haido Town and arrests him on the spot.
Chiba gets a major chance to shine in this chapter. Even so, he modestly acknowledges that it was not entirely his own achievement.
- Conan and Shukichi gave him the necessary hints.
- He noticed the oddness of the deodorizing beads because Naeko had mentioned the glare phenomenon.
The ending gives Chiba a strong role while still keeping him humble.
The trick itself lands cleanly, and the police-side atmosphere at the end feels good. With that, the escape game series comes to a close.
