Detective Conan File 1156 “The Magic to Find the Ring” spoilers
The murder case of Kurumi Nishiei finally moves into its solution chapter in File 1156.
The chapter opens after the ring search, with the three suspects washing off their sweat in the hot spring.

According to the three women, after Katsuto got married, silent phone calls and nuisance emails began arriving.
They suggest that the culprit might be that stalker, but Shibukawa and Ichiki leave the bath, saying they will tell the police.
The culprit starts searching for the ring in the hot spring
After the other two leave, Jujo takes out a plastic bag she had hidden between a chair and a basin and begins filling it with water.
She sinks the bag into the mud-clouded bath and puts her foot inside it, making a motion as if she is feeling around the bottom.
Before long, she finds the important ring that had fallen into the hot spring.
Chihaya, who has witnessed the scene, calls her out.

At that moment, it becomes clear that Jujo is the culprit in the Hakone hot spring case.
The culprit’s trick: using a plastic bag as a clear-view lens
Chihaya had suspected that Jujo would use the transparent plastic bag that had held her underwear.
- Fill the plastic bag with water.
- Let the muddy bath water coat the outside.
- Then the bottom of the hot spring can be seen clearly through the bag.
That is the mechanism behind the trick: even in cloudy bathwater, the ring’s position can be checked with ease.
The ring is also highly likely to have blood spatter on it. If the culprit is holding it, it becomes decisive evidence.
However, Jujo’s yukata shows no blood reaction. Instead, Kurumi’s blood is detected on another guest’s yukata.
The reason is simple.
Jujo’s bloodstain-hiding trick
- She wrapped her whole body in toilet paper before committing the murder.
- The blood spatter stuck to the paper, leaving the yukata almost clean.
- After the crime, she put on the yukata, though a small amount of blood still remained.
- In the changing room, she waited for a guest with a similar body type and switched yukata with that person.
- Once she entered the hot spring, the bloodstains on her body would wash away completely.
In other words, Jujo’s sweat and skin traces would remain on the bloodstained yukata, making that contact evidence the key to identifying the culprit.
The motive was “the ring I was supposed to receive”
Jujo says that this ring was supposed to be the wedding ring she would wear.
On the day before their high school graduation ceremony, Jujo wrote a love letter to Katsuto and asked her best friend Kurumi to pass it to him.
But Kurumi told her that Katsuto already had someone he liked, so Jujo believed her own love had ended.
Years later, a shocking truth comes out at the reunion.
- Katsuto had feelings for Jujo.
- Katsuto had prepared a love letter for Jujo.
- But Kurumi told him on her own that Jujo had someone she liked, making him give up.
For Jujo, Kurumi became an unforgivable “devil” who had twisted both of their feelings.
That became the motive for the murder.
After hearing this, Chihaya says Jujo is also at fault for entrusting her own feelings to someone else.
Then, thinking of Jinpei Matsuda’s face, she says:

The story then moves into a flashback.
Jinpei Matsuda’s “student proposal” is finally explained
The chapter returns once more to the flashback from Chihaya’s high school days.
Chihaya has dropped a ring won at a shooting gallery into a puddle. The water is too muddy to see the bottom, but Matsuda uses a plastic bag containing goldfish and instantly finds Chihaya’s ring.
Then he says to Chihaya:
“Chihaya! There’s something on your left hand.” (unofficial translation)

The ring is already on Chihaya’s ring finger.
Matsuda continues head-on:
“I can tell you how I found it… but in exchange… go on a date with me!” (unofficial translation)
Chihaya brushes him off by saying that, in that case, she does not want to know.
Kenji Hagiwara then explains that using the goldfish’s plastic bag makes it possible to see clearly through the muddy water.
After that, Chihaya tells Matsuda that, as a reward, she will at least go to a movie with him, giving the flashback a very them-like sense of distance.
The trick in the present case and Matsuda’s old confession are tied together through the same “magic” for finding a ring.
Jugo’s jealousy: Jinpei Matsuda is a rival even after death
After the case is solved, Chihaya is lost in thought, and Jugo Yokomizo asks her about it.
When he asks whether she said something to the culprit because the culprit suddenly became quiet, Chihaya answers:

Hearing that, Jugo mutters inwardly that Jinpei Matsuda is still a tough opponent even though he is dead.
The chapter closes on a bittersweet but charming note: Matsuda still has such a strong presence inside Chihaya that Jugo cannot help feeling jealous.
