Detective Conan File 1140 “Entrusted Evidence” – Spoilers

The chapter opens in the hospital where the latest victim, Yūta Kitakura, has been rushed after his Mini crashed.

Detectives Kansuke Yamato and Takaaki Morofushi arrive to find Inspector Yui Uehara, the Detective Boys, and the three remaining suspects—Shichisuke Kasai, Kaori Nanjō, and Tamaki Itō.

Kitakura is out of surgery but still unconscious.

File 1140 Spoiler ① – Yamato Experiences the “Corpse-Lighter” Phenomenon

Bundled in sunglasses, scarf, gloves, and a heavy down coat, Yamato reaches for a canned coffee handed over by Morofushi—and flames suddenly leap from his glove!

When he recoils against a pillar, smoke billows from his back; moments later, his scarf ignites.

The Detective Boys gasp that the legendary “Corpse-Lighter” (Shibito no Mitō) has struck again.

File 1140 Spoiler ② – Conan Explains the Trick Behind the Fires

After dousing the flames with a fire extinguisher, Conan reveals the true purpose: to stage the attacks as supernatural.

He breaks down each gimmick:

  • Flaming coffee can – The surface was coated with ethanol hand-sanitizer and ignited.
  • Smoking back – A coin purse filled with dry ice and water was hidden in Yamato’s hood; bumping the wall vented the vapor, and the hood had been pre-scorched for effect.
  • Burning scarf – A high-powered foreign laser pointer focused on one spot until the fabric caught fire.

Only Tamaki Itō possessed the necessary laser, making her the prime suspect.

File 1140 Spoiler ③ – Reconstructing Tamaki’s Full Arson Method

Yamato names Tamaki as the culprit. Conan details her sequence of attacks:

  1. She stole Kitakura’s electronic lighter to ignite sanitizer gel in a dish, causing the first sleeve fire.
  2. Footage shows Tamaki slipping a coin purse into Kaori’s hood, creating the second “smoke” incident.
  3. During the convoy drive, Tamaki taped the laser pointer to the van so that its beam tracked Kitakura’s out-stretched arm for ten to fifteen seconds—long enough to set his sleeve ablaze. The colored tape matching the Mini’s paint, later found in the woods, confirms this setup.

File 1140 Spoiler ④ – Why Tamaki Targeted Kitakura

The motive traces back to the lodge fire three months earlier that killed Takehiko Nanjō.

His Compass Club badge uniquely showed the letter C replacing the “pa” circle—signifying “Captain.”

After the blaze, Tamaki saw Kitakura wearing that badge and assumed he murdered Takehiko to steal leadership.

In reality, Takehiko had entrusted the badge to Kitakura while trapped beneath a cabinet; Kitakura dialed emergency services and saved Tamaki, acting on Takehiko’s dying wish.

Tamaki’s vengeful attacks were born of a tragic misunderstanding.

With Kitakura’s surgery deemed successful, Tamaki apologizes at his bedside, bringing the Nagano “phantom flames” case to a close.

Detective Conan File 1140 “Entrusted Evidence” – Review & Thoughts

The four-chapter Compass Detective Club case in Nagano has wrapped up—ending on a bittersweet note born of a single tragic misunderstanding.

Below are a few quick take-aways and theories.

File 1140 Review & Theories ① – Surprisingly Little “Nagano” Flavor

This mini-arc was timed to promote the upcoming movie One-Eyed Afterimage, so many readers expected heavier Nagano-police content.

In the end, the elementary-school relay flashback was the story’s only real local touch.

We did learn that Yui Uehara was a first-grader when Kansuke Yamato and Takaaki Morofushi were sixth-graders—and that her crush on Kansuke dates back to that moment.

Personally, I was hoping for a cameo from Hiromitsu “Scotch” Morofushi or some deeper tie-in via Kaori’s scorched phone, but no luck this time.

File 1140 Review & Theories ② – “Sleeping Kogoro” Still Nowhere in Sight

As is tradition with Nagano cases, the Yamato & Morofushi duo solved everything without the aid of Kogoro Mori’s famed sleep-talk deductions.

The long-running Nagano “no Sleeping Kogoro” streak remains unbroken—though fans still hope he’ll one day nod off in front of the prefecture’s finest.

File 1140 Review & Theories ③ – A Clever Yet Heartwarming Trick

The fire-starting mechanics were tougher than usual: a fixed laser pointer for the third blaze was a neat twist, while the sanitizer-gel ignition in the first incident was equally tricky.

Each gadget came straight from its owner’s belongings, showing impressive plotting.

The baton-style passing of the Compass badge echoed Yamato and Morofushi’s own relay ribbon from the previous flashback—tying the emotional theme together nicely.

File 1140 Review & Theories ④ – Is Kogoro’s Absence Setting Up the Movie?

Kogoro missed the Nagano investigation due to a cold, but in the final panel he sees a photo of Conan with a mystery woman and vows, “I’m coming next time!”

That “next time” likely points straight at One-Eyed Afterimage.

Keep an eye on whether Kogoro’s earlier no-show was deliberate foreshadowing for his role in the film.
