Kogoro’s suspicious meeting was not an affair: he had been asking Midori Kuriyama how Eri might react to gifts.
The chapter resolves the three paper bags and closes the Kogoro-Eri case before “One-eyed Flashback.” It does not resolve Conan’s earlier Black Organization memories.
Detective Conan File 1143: “Like a Puff of Smoke”
Kogoro tells A, B, and C that he understands the mystery. The three men want their bags back, but their physical clues expose the lies they told in File 1142.
The Clues Suggest C Is a Manga Artist
C claimed that he was a film assistant director preparing to scatter banknotes from a ceiling. The clues instead include a callus on his right middle finger, eraser dust, and fingerprints consistent with holding a model gun in his left hand while drawing. His unfamiliarity with marking performers’ positions also undermines his film credentials.
The evidence therefore points toward C being a manga artist. The model gun and the sketching traces are the important clues; the chapter does not require the reader to accept every detail of his work history as a separate confirmed fact.
B Is a Television Prank-Show Assistant Director
B has stage-position tape on his legs and a thick marker used to write instructions on a sketchbook. When Conan opens the milk carton, red liquid bursts out. The red paper in the sketchbook becomes blood-like when wet, showing that the bag contains a prank-show device rather than a murder weapon.
B’s horse-racing story also collapses. Kogoro is using the Japanese word teppō: it can mean “gun,” but in racing it describes a horse returning after a long break. B treats the word only as a pistol reference, exposing the weakness in his betting story. B and C leave after Kogoro exposes their lies.
A Is the Fake Lawyer Behind the Money
A takes the money bag to West Haido Station and meets a suspicious man. Kogoro, Eri, Conan, and Ran wait for him in a taxi after planting Kogoro’s phone in the bag with a call connected. The call lets them hear A mocking Kogoro and learn about the handover of roughly one hundred million yen.
Eri explains why A may not be a real lawyer. His badge uses a screw fitting even though a newly issued badge should use the other style, a discrepancy that casts doubt on the badge rather than proving the case by itself. He also cannot explain the registration number printed on the back. The cash smells of mothballs, suggesting it was taken from an elderly person’s stored household savings.
A Worked as the Group’s Cash Courier
A gives information about the group, and Kogoro and his companions find and free an elderly victim who had been restrained. Officers follow the other man to the group’s hideout and arrest the boss as well. A’s role was the courier who received the money, not the person who designed the whole fraud.
Kogoro’s “Secret Meeting” Was About Eri
Ran checks Kogoro’s phone and sees a message from “Maron” arranging a meeting at the Callahan Café. The name points to Midori Kuriyama, the paralegal who works at Eri’s law office and is absent with a cold. Kogoro had asked her about presents for Ran and about Eri’s reaction to Christmas and White Day gifts.
The earlier suspicion of infidelity therefore turns into a small romantic reveal: Kogoro was trying to learn how to make Eri happy. When Eri nearly tells him that he could simply ask her directly, Kogoro becomes embarrassed and disappears like a puff of smoke.
What the Ending Says About Kogoro and Eri
The paper-bag case is deliberately straightforward once the professional clues are visible. Its emotional point is that Kogoro and Eri solve it together without needing the Sleeping Kogoro routine. Their work together suggests that their shared timing and complementary expertise remain intact, even though the chapter does not resolve their separation.
The Itakura Thread Is Still Waiting
The Black Organization memories from File 1141 do not receive their expected payoff in this chapter. The cat-and-baby misunderstanding supports a possible Renya Karasuma rejuvenation theory, but that remains a theory rather than a revealed answer.
Conclusion: File 1143 closes the paper-bag mystery, exposes a fraud ring’s cash courier, and reframes Kogoro’s meeting as an attempt to choose gifts for Eri. The chapter’s family focus invited comparison with “One-eyed Flashback,” but the film is not evidence that the manga case has a direct connection.
