Spoilers for Detective Conan File 1144, “The Summoned Man”

The chapter opens at Teitan Elementary School. Classes are over, but Conan sits alone at his desk, deep in thought.

He’s still wrestling with the Black Organization clues that resurfaced in File 1141, “Kogoro’s Secret Meeting.” Bits and pieces flash through his mind:

  • Suguru Itakura, the freelance programmer.
  • The hitman Tequila.
  • The domineering, silver-haired woman—Vermouth.
  • And, above all, the mysterious software Itakura abandoned at the Organization’s request.

The trigger for this mental rewind was a casual conversation he overheard between Ran and her mother, Eri Kisaki. When Ran mentioned “medicine,” Conan subconsciously linked it to the Black Organization’s drug research and froze, wondering if that “medicine” could be connected to APTX 4869.

One question keeps echoing in his head—Haibara’s warning from the previous arc:

“If you force fate to bend your way… you’ll pay the price.”

What exactly is that “price”? Conan can’t shake the feeling that the answer lies in the Organization’s next move—and File 1144 sets him on a direct collision course with it.

File 1144 Spoiler ① – Info on the “Man in Black”

Haibara asks Conan, “Do you really want to be punished?”—a callback to when she and Maria watered the school flowerbeds as penance for accidentally burning them.

Ayumi then recounts seeing a scary man yelling at an elderly passer-by while she was shopping with her mother.

The stranger snatched the old man’s bags and even lifted the man himself.

Ayumi never saw his face, only that he wore an all-black hoodie from head to toe. Conan immediately wonders if this could be a Black Organization operative and heads to the scene.

File 1144 Spoiler ② – FBI Agent Camel at the Scene

Conan and the Detective Boys arrive, only to find FBI agent André Camel lurking there.

Conan recognizes him at once, although Camel is sporting the short hair he adopted in the anime arc “Black Organization’s Scheme.”

The other kids don’t notice, so Conan smoothly introduces him under the alias “Tatsuya Ando.” Haibara, however, clearly knows Camel’s true identity.

Camel Was Actually Helping

Ayumi’s “suspicious” incident turns out to be a good deed: the elderly man needed help getting to Beika Station.

Because the man wears a hearing aid and speaks loudly, bystanders thought Camel was a thief when he picked up the bags—so he carried man and luggage together to avoid further confusion.

Just as the misunderstanding clears and the group prepares to leave…

File 1144 Spoiler ③ – A Kitchen Knife Flies Out of a Nearby Apartment

A crash—glass shattering—then a knife lands near Conan’s feet from a third-floor window. Moments later, a gunshot rings out.

File 1144 Spoiler ④ – Witnesses Converge

Host Michiyoshi Takabuki arrives, saying, “That sound came from Ayako’s place!”

He claims Ayako recently bragged about getting a gun. As Conan and Camel dash upstairs, another host, Ikuto Nishime, pounds on Ayako’s door. Neighbors report a vicious fight between a man and woman, followed by the gunshot.

When Conan asks where the landlady is, host Satoru Shimpo explains she’s at a pachinko parlor near Beika Station.

File 1144 Spoiler ⑤ – Inside Ayako’s Apartment

Thirty minutes later the landlady unlocks the door. Smoke fills the unit; a frying pan sits unattended on a lit burner, its contents charred black.

Deeper inside lies a woman apparently shot—yet thick rubber bands around her wrist suggest a staged suicide.

File 1144 Spoiler ⑥ – The Surprise “Big Boss” Appearance

All three hosts insist Ayako summoned them. Suddenly Haibara’s danger sense goes off; she crouches outside, shaken. The new arrival? Sushi chef Kanenori Wakita—better known to readers as a RUM candidate.

Delivering “two orders of premium nigiri,” he notes there should be only two diners, not three. Spotting Camel, Wakita muses:

“Haven’t we met somewhere before, pal?”

To be continued in File 1145…

Thoughts & Theories on Detective Conan File 1144 “The Summoned Man”

① A Long-Awaited, High-Stakes Chapter in the Black Organization Arc

The opening flashback—Vermouth, Tequila, Suguru Itakura, and the abandoned software—signals that decades-old Black Organization plot threads may finally pay off.

Conan’s focus shifts from the word “medicine” to Haibara’s warning about a coming “punishment.” One hot theory: Renya Karasuma, the Organization’s boss, used a youth-restoring drug and paid a price for it—exactly the “punishment” Haibara hinted at.

② André Camel Is Officially “Dead” to the Public

Key player this week: FBI agent André Camel. After the anime arc “Black Organization’s Scheme,” the Bureau faked his death, forcing him to cut his long hair and live in hiding.

Because Vermouth, Korn, and RUM all remember Camel as “the man closest to Shuichi Akai,” his survival must stay secret—hence the black hoodie disguise.

③ Camel and Wakita (RUM) Must Never Cross Paths

File 1144 breaks the cardinal rule: Camel and sushi chef Kanenori Wakita—secretly RUM—come face-to-face.

If RUM realizes Camel is alive, the Organization could trace a line back to Shuichi Akai or Kir and order their elimination.

Camel’s cover cannot be blown, or RUM will unleash the full might of the Black Organization to hunt him down.

④ …Yet Camel Might Unmask RUM First

The flip side: Camel knows RUM operates under a “ridiculous alias.” Wakita’s odd name and timing could raise his suspicions. File 1144 might become the moment Conan’s allies identify Wakita as RUM—an explosive development to watch in upcoming chapters.

In short, Detective Conan File 1144 delivers major Black Organization momentum, resurrects fan-favorite FBI agent André Camel, and sets up a tense showdown with RUM/Wakita Kanenori. Keep an eye on how this “punishment” theme—and Camel’s discovery—play out in the next file.
