Big questions loom: Who is Kogoro meeting, and could that rendezvous be tied to the Black Organization?
Speculation is already running wild among fans.

Spoilers for Detective Conan File 1142: “The Liar Is…”
The chapter picks up right where File 1141 left off.
Outside the station plaza, three men collide, scattering their three identical paper bags across the pavement.
When one bag bursts open, stacks of cash spill out—and each man instantly claims the money is his.
File 1142 Spoiler ① – What Each Man Claims
• The man wearing his cap backward insists the windfall is prize money from hitting a dark-horse bet at the racetrack.
• The man with the tiny mustache says the bills are merely a film prop he was transporting to a shoot.
• The suited man asserts the cash is a ¥100 million ransom payment demanded for the hostage son of a wealthy patron.
A curious crowd gathers, so attorney Eri Kisaki quickly moves the dispute away from the station and into a nearby family restaurant called “Danny’s.”
File 1142 Spoiler ② – Questioning the Three Men at “Danny’s”
The trio sits down for informal questioning—names withheld.
Man A (the “lawyer,” wearing a bar association badge)
He says he withdrew the money from the bank on behalf of a wealthy client. Eri notices his badge fastens with a screw rather than the standard pin, raising suspicion. Asked for his registration number, he admits he can’t recall it.
Man B (the part-timer in the cap)
He doubles down on the racetrack story. When Kogoro Mouri asks which model of starter pistol caught his eye, the man replies the gun isn’t his. Conan, however, spots strips of vinyl tape stuck to his pants and a thick marker protruding from his back pocket—tools he says he uses for handicapping horse races.
Man C (the mustached assistant director)
Claiming he works in film, he says the cash will be used for a scene where banknotes rain down on camera. Kogoro warns that failing to mark positions (with “bami tape”) could be dangerous on set, which C meets with a puzzled “Bami… view?” Eri notes the distinctive way his thumb is wrapped in a bandage, while Conan observes a conspicuous swelling on the tip of his middle finger.
Who’s lying—and why? File 1142, “The Liar Is…,” sets the stage for Conan and Eri to separate truth from bluff while a fresh mystery unfolds.
File 1142 Spoiler ③ – What’s Really Inside the Three Paper Bags?
With the dispute moved to Danny’s, Conan and company open each bag for closer inspection—uncovering clues that expose contradictions in every story.
Bag #1 – Stacks of ¥10,000 Notes
The money is genuine; the bills feel crisp and carry a strong moth-ball odor, like they were stored in a closet for years.
Bag #2 – Replica Handguns
Every pistol is clearly a model gun, dusted in white eraser-like flakes. Fingerprint patterns reveal that whoever handled them gripped from the left side, turning the barrel toward himself—odd for a supposed prop master.
Bag #3 – “Bloody” Knife, T-Shirt & Milk Carton
The knife and shirt are smeared with red paint, not blood. The milk-carton cap has a rubbery substance wedged inside, and a puncture hole in the bottom. When Kogoro tries to twist the cap, Conan quickly stops him—this rig might be more than a simple prop.
Inside the same bag is a sketchbook stuffed with red construction paper; the reverse sides are blank peel-and-stick sheets—perfect for staging fake blood splatter.
As Ran whispers that all three men seem to be lying, Kogoro and attorney Eri Kisaki nod in agreement:
That’s inevitable—because each of them is lying!
But one of these suspects is weaving an even bigger deception than the rest…
To be continued in Detective Conan File 1143.
Detective Conan File 1142 “The Liar Is…” – Review & Analysis
This chapter lets Eri Kisaki and Kogoro Mori handle the suspects’ questioning in place of the police.
Read closely and you’ll see Kogoro looking unexpectedly cool—well worth a second look!
File 1142 Review & Theory ① – A Chapter Where All Three Men Are Liars
On the surface, today’s mystery feels straightforward. The cash almost certainly belongs to “Lawyer A,” yet even his claim to be an attorney is a lie (details in the theory section below). In short:
- A isn’t a lawyer at all—he’s likely a burglar, con artist, or armed robber.
- B is really an assistant director who happens to be carrying a sketchbook and other production supplies.
- C owns the replica guns.
File 1142 Review & Theory ② – Kogoro’s Casual Trap-Setting Is Smooth
Kogoro quietly baits each suspect:
- To the man in the cap, he drops the racing slang “teppō” (starter pistol). The man mistakes it for an actual gun—proof he’s lying.
- To the movie assistant director, he mentions “bami tape,” an industry term for marking actors’ positions. The director thinks it means “view the set,” exposing another lie.
Kogoro’s off-hand questions tighten the net without the suspects even noticing.
File 1142 Review & Theory ③ – Identifying the Real Owner of the Cash Is Easier Than It Looks
Because we now know all three are lying, let’s break it down:
- A cannot be a real lawyer. Besides the screw-back badge, he can’t recite his bar-registration number—unforgivable for any genuine attorney.
- B never landed a giant racetrack payout. As noted, teppō is racing jargon, not a handgun. His thick marker and sketchbook are classic A.D. gear, while the vinyl tape on his leg is for marking actors’ spots. His “bloody props” likely belong to a prank segment.
- C also fails the bami tape test and clearly isn’t the cash owner. The callus on his right-hand middle finger suggests a manga artist who uses replica guns as drawing references—hence the eraser shavings.
File 1142 Review & Theory ④ – The Cash Was Stolen in a Scam
The only logical owner is Faux-Lawyer A, but his “inheritance” tale is fiction. Ran noticed the banknotes smell like mothballs—classic “mattress money.” Odds are he posed as an attorney and swindled an elderly victim out of hidden savings. In short, the cash is dirty money.
File 1142 Review & Theory ⑤ – Who Was Kogoro Talking to on the Phone?
Amid the chaos it’s easy to forget Kogoro’s earlier call:
Kogoro「A high-school girl… I’ve no idea what kind of present she wants…」
Kogoro「I figured a woman would know better, so I called you…”」
The mystery woman could be Yukiko Kudo, Detective Sato, Yui Uehara, Sonoko, or someone else entirely.
File 1142 Review & Theory ⑥ – Kogoro × Eri Remains the Ultimate Duo
In the final scene, both Kogoro and Eri independently conclude all three suspects are lying—and that one of them is spinning an especially big whopper.
Their wordless teamwork proves once again why this estranged couple is an unbeatable pair.
Keep an eye on them in the next chapter!
