And who knows that Subaru Okiya is really Akai?
Shuichi Akai’s apparent death protected both him and Kir from the Black Organization. He later began living at the Kudo Residence under the identity of Subaru Okiya, adding a second secret on top of the first.
Ten named characters other than Akai himself know that he survived, but not all ten are confirmed to know his Okiya identity. This article separates those two questions and identifies the manga and anime evidence behind each answer.

The Answer: Ten Know Akai Survived, but Fewer Know He Is Okiya
The ten characters who know Akai is alive are Conan Edogawa, Hiroshi Agasa, Yukiko Kudo, Yusaku Kudo, James Black, Kir, Shukichi Haneda, Jodie Starling, Andre Camel, and Rei Furuya.

This is why different lists sometimes give different totals. Eight people are commonly counted as knowing Okiya’s identity, but James’s inclusion depends on strong implication rather than a direct on-page disclosure. If the standard is limited to characters explicitly shown with that knowledge, the safest total is seven.
Kir and Shukichi belong in the group of ten because the story confirms that they know Akai survived. However, that alone does not prove that they were told where he lives or that Subaru Okiya is his disguise.
The count also excludes Akai himself and avoids treating a character’s intuition as knowledge. A character enters the confirmed group only when the manga shows direct participation, an explicit disclosure, communication that would be impossible if Akai were dead, or actions that require knowledge of the Okiya disguise. This stricter standard prevents family ties and good guesses from being presented as canon facts.

The table deliberately uses a canon evidence column instead of an exact “when they learned” column. For Yukiko, Yusaku, James, and Shukichi, the story confirms knowledge or involvement without establishing that all of them joined Conan’s plan at the same moment.
There are three useful evidence levels. Explicit knowledge means a scene directly reveals the secret or the character acts on it. Strongly implied knowledge means the surrounding events leave little practical doubt, even though the manga does not show a direct reveal. Unclear means the character knows Akai is alive but could still be unaware of his current name, appearance, or location.
Who Knew About Shuichi Akai’s Fake Death?
Conan and Kir are indispensable to the fake-death operation, while the others learned or supported different layers of the plan. Their roles should not be treated as identical.
Conan Designed the Deception at Raiha Pass
Conan devised the method that allowed Kir to appear to shoot Akai while preserving Akai’s life. The plan used Rikumichi Kusuda’s body, Conan’s cell phone, and carefully controlled evidence to convince both the Black Organization and the FBI that Akai had died.
Conan therefore knows both levels of the secret from the beginning: Akai survived, and Akai later lives as Subaru Okiya. He also provides Okiya with access to the Kudo Residence, making him the central link between the fake death and the new identity.
The deception succeeds because the physical evidence points to the wrong conclusion. Kusuda’s body supplies a corpse, while the fingerprints on Conan’s phone help the police identify that corpse as Akai. The blood and shooting are staged so that Gin sees what he expects to see. Akai can then leave the scene without exposing Kir as a double agent.
This makes Conan’s position unique. Other characters may know the result or help maintain the disguise, but Conan understands how every part of the false death connects to Akai’s new life as Okiya.
Kir Made the False Death Convincing
Kir knows Akai survived because she carried out the staged shooting at Raiha Pass. As a CIA operative working inside the Black Organization, she had to make Gin believe the execution was real while giving Akai the chance to disappear.
Nothing requires Kir to know the next layer of the operation. The manga has not clearly shown that she was told Akai became Okiya or moved into the Kudo Residence, so her knowledge of the disguise should remain classified as unclear.
That information limit also makes operational sense. Kir must survive daily scrutiny inside the organization. If Bourbon or Gin were to extract information from her, knowing only that the death was staged would expose less than knowing Akai’s current face and address. The story never needs Kir to possess the full Okiya secret.
Agasa and the Kudo Family Supported the Okiya Identity
Agasa knows the truth because the Okiya disguise depends on his voice-changing choker. Yukiko, who learned disguise techniques from Toichi Kuroba, helps Akai create and maintain Okiya’s appearance.
Yusaku is definitively informed by the time of the Scarlet Return arc. He impersonates Okiya at the Kudo Residence while the real Akai acts elsewhere, creating the crucial illusion that Okiya and Akai are two different people. This proves Yusaku knows both secrets, but it does not prove that he helped design the original Raiha Pass plan.
The Kudo family’s contribution is therefore clearest in the maintenance of Okiya’s identity. Yukiko supplies disguise expertise, Yusaku can convincingly play the role when needed, and their house gives Akai a secure base close to Conan. Agasa’s technology completes the cover by allowing Okiya’s voice to differ from Akai’s natural voice.
James Knows Akai Survived, but the Okiya Evidence Is Indirect
James notices the coating on Akai’s fingers and learns the truth behind the fake death. His later relationship with Akai strongly suggests that he also recognizes the Okiya disguise, which is why he is commonly included in lists of eight people who know Okiya’s identity.
Still, the manga does not give James the same unmistakable reveal scene that it gives Jodie, Camel, or Rei. Calling his knowledge “strongly implied” is more precise than presenting it as an explicit confirmation.
This distinction does not mean James is probably ignorant. As the FBI leader coordinating with Akai, it would be difficult for him to remain unaware of Okiya indefinitely. It simply separates a highly persuasive inference from a fact the reader sees stated or demonstrated beyond dispute.
Shukichi Knows His Brother Is Alive
Shukichi exchanges messages with Shuichi during the Policewomen Serial Murder Case. That contact confirms that he knows his older brother survived. The relevant material appears in manga Files 1015–1017 and anime Episodes 972–974.
The story does not establish that Shukichi knows the Okiya identity. His family connection makes that possible, but possibility is not enough to move him into the confirmed group.
The messages are important because they replace an assumption based on family ties with direct evidence of contact. At the same time, contact with Shuichi does not reveal which identity he uses elsewhere. Shukichi can know that his brother is alive without knowing the details of the disguise.
Who Learned the Truth Later?
Jodie, Camel, and Rei reach the truth after spending much of the story outside Akai’s inner circle. Their discoveries show why “knowing he survived” and “proving he is Okiya” are separate steps.
Jodie and Camel Learn the Truth in the Scarlet Return Arc
Jodie and Camel genuinely believe Akai is dead. Keeping them uninformed helps make the deception believable to anyone watching the FBI. Their grief is real because they were not acting.
That changes in the Scarlet Return arc, covered by manga Files 894–898 and anime Episodes 781–783. Camel follows Akai’s instructions during the pursuit, while Jodie finally sees that Akai survived and has been living as Okiya.
Their delayed discovery is not a sign that Akai distrusted them. Their sincere belief in his death helped protect the plan: neither their behavior nor their grief could betray a secret they did not know. Once Bourbon’s investigation threatens to expose Akai, secrecy inside the FBI is no longer as useful, and both agents can finally act with the truth.
Rei’s Suspicion Develops Across Three Major Cases
Rei first reconstructs the fake-death method and suspects that Okiya is Akai during the Scarlet Return arc. Conan’s side counters him by having Yusaku appear as Okiya while Akai is active elsewhere, so Rei cannot prove his theory at that point.
His suspicion does not disappear permanently. It surfaces again around The Betrayal’s Stage, manga Files 954–957 and anime Episodes 866–867. The confrontation at the Kudo Residence in The Unsolved Cocktail Case, manga Files 1009–1012 and anime Episodes 952–954, finally confirms that Rei knows Okiya is Akai.
Rei’s path is therefore best described in three stages: deduction, temporary obstruction, and confirmation. The Scarlet Return arc shows that his reasoning is essentially correct; Yusaku’s performance prevents him from proving it; and the later confrontation removes the remaining uncertainty. Saying that Rei simply “learned the truth in the Scarlet series” compresses that progression too much.
Who Suspects Subaru Okiya’s Identity?
Masumi Sera, Ai Haibara, Rumi Wakasa, and Vermouth have each noticed something unusual about Okiya, but suspicion is not the same as confirmed knowledge.
- Masumi Sera: repeatedly investigates Okiya and recognizes similarities connected to her brother, but the manga has not clearly shown that she knows the full truth.
- Ai Haibara: senses danger around Okiya and notices behavior that does not fit his cover identity. She becomes comfortable with him, yet explicit knowledge of Akai’s identity is not confirmed.
- Rumi Wakasa: notices Okiya’s neck device, suggesting that she has detected part of the disguise. Her exact conclusion remains unknown.
- Vermouth: is positioned to suspect that Akai survived, but the story has not shown her possessing complete proof of Okiya’s identity.
These characters should remain outside the confirmed count unless the manga gives them a clear disclosure, a direct identification, or actions that require full knowledge of both secrets.
Their suspicions are not all equal. Masumi has the strongest personal reason to pursue Akai, Haibara reacts to Okiya through instinct and observation, Rumi notices a physical feature of the disguise, and Vermouth understands the Black Organization’s hunt for Akai. Each may hold a different piece of the answer without possessing the complete picture.
What The Scarlet Bullet Suggests About Mary Sera
Mary and Masumi should be evaluated separately, and the movie evidence should not be treated as a manga confirmation.
In Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet, Mary appears to recognize more about Akai or Okiya than she openly says. The scene is meaningful, especially because Mary is Akai’s mother, but it does not clearly establish exactly what she knows or when she learned it.
Masumi is also close to the truth, but her investigation of Okiya is different from Mary’s guarded reactions. Combining them into one “Mary and Masumi know” category makes the evidence look stronger than it is. Until the manga confirms otherwise, both are best described as unconfirmed, with Mary carrying an additional movie-based clue.
This article uses the manga as the primary standard for the confirmed count. Movie scenes can illuminate relationships and suggest what a character may suspect, but they should be labeled separately when they do not receive the same explicit confirmation in the serialized story.
