Are Vermouth and Yukiko Kudo still friends?
When did Yukiko discover Sharon's true identity?
Vermouth and Yukiko Kudo became close during their acting careers. Yukiko trusted Sharon Vineyard, and both women learned disguise techniques from the same teacher. Today, however, they operate on opposing sides.
Yukiko helps protect Conan and Haibara, while Vermouth remains a Black Organization operative. Their shared history makes that opposition more complicated than an ordinary rivalry. This article follows their friendship, teacher, identity revelations, and later confrontations, with major spoilers.
Vermouth and Yukiko's relationship at a glance

Yukiko and Vermouth were close friends as actresses, but now stand on opposite sides of the conflict between the Kudo family and the Black Organization. The internationally famous Sharon Vineyard whom Yukiko knew is Vermouth herself.
After learning the truth, Yukiko supports plans involving Conan, Haibara, and the FBI. Vermouth, in turn, knows that Yukiko has discovered her identity and is assisting Conan's side.
That does not prove every trace of their old affection has vanished. Their exchanges can retain the familiarity of friends even when their objectives conflict. This unresolved mixture of personal history and practical hostility is central to their relationship.
Yukiko's actress friend was Sharon Vineyard
Yukiko Kudo and Sharon Vineyard were fellow actresses with a longstanding friendship. Alongside their acting careers, they studied disguise techniques with the same Japanese magician as part of learning to portray other people convincingly.
In New York, Yukiko treats Sharon as a dear friend, expresses concern about the unhappiness in her life, and naturally introduces her son and Ran. She does not know that Sharon belongs to the Black Organization.
Their friendship is therefore unequal in what each person knows. Sharon conceals her other identity, while Yukiko takes the friendship at face value. Amid Vermouth's aliases, disguises, and fabricated family identities, Yukiko is one of the few people shown as a friend of Sharon.
The story has not specified how much of Sharon's behavior was sincere. Still, later encounters leave room to believe that their time together was not entirely an act.
They now serve opposing sides
Yukiko knows that Shinichi Kudo was reduced to a child's body by APTX 4869 and now lives as Conan Edogawa. She also knows that Ai Haibara is Shiho Miyano, the former Organization scientist, and helps protect them.
Vermouth remains an Organization member. Her special feelings toward Shinichi and Ran do not mean she has abandoned its operations, and she has actively tried to eliminate Sherry.
The Mystery Train puts that conflict into direct focus: Yukiko helps Haibara escape, while Vermouth pursues Sherry. Later, Vermouth approaches the Kudo family on Rum's instructions during Yusaku Kudo's Detective Show.
Protecting Conan on some occasions does not make Vermouth a dependable ally of the family. Nor can Yukiko rely on her old affection for Sharon when lives are at stake. They share a past they cannot erase while reading and countering each other's plans in the present.
Is Vermouth unable to kill Yukiko?
It is not confirmed that Vermouth could never kill Yukiko. On the Mystery Train she points a gun at her and demands that she withdraw. She does not immediately fire, but the threat is real.
Their earlier friendship may influence that restraint. Other explanations remain possible, including avoiding a disturbance on the train or stopping Yukiko's plan without killing her. The scene does not isolate one definitive motive.
Vermouth's feelings toward Shinichi and Ran must also be distinguished from her friendship with Yukiko. Their rescue of her in New York is a crucial personal reason for how she treats them.
Not shooting Yukiko and protecting Shinichi or Ran are related aspects of Vermouth's complexity, but they are not interchangeable evidence. The scene permits an interpretation of lingering affection without establishing an absolute moral limit she cannot cross.
Disguise training connects their friendship

Both women studied disguise techniques under the same Japanese magician: Toichi Kuroba, the original Kaito Kid. Their shared teacher connects their acting careers to the Kuroba family.
Their shared training is an important link, even though the story does not establish whether it was the first place they met. The same skill now serves very different purposes on the two sides of the conflict.
They trained with the same magician for acting roles
Yukiko learned disguise techniques while preparing to play a female spy. Sharon studied under the same teacher, learning how to change appearance rather than relying only on an actor's performance.
It is unclear whether they first met during that training or already knew each other. What is certain is that they learned disguise techniques from the same teacher.
Yukiko's skill later becomes a way to help her family and support Conan's plans. Vermouth uses disguise to infiltrate, approach targets, and serve the Organization. A technique associated with glamorous acting careers thus becomes a weapon in a dangerous private conflict.
Their teacher was Toichi Kuroba, the original Kaito Kid
Toichi Kuroba taught both Yukiko and Sharon disguise techniques. Shinichi Kudo's New York Case establishes their shared Japanese magician as a teacher, while the childhood-adventure story connects Yukiko's former teacher to Toichi.
Toichi is Kaito Kuroba's father and the first Kaito Kid. His expertise combines magic, disguise, and performance, and the two actresses learned part of that craft from him.
It is not established that both pupils knew his identity as the phantom thief. Knowing him as a respected teacher is different from knowing the full extent of his secret life.
The connection links actresses, the Kudo family, the Kuroba family, and Vermouth through one skill. That is significant without requiring every person involved to have known every secret.
Their disguise abilities are not identical
Both women are excellent at changing appearance, but Vermouth can also imitate voices without relying on a device. Her long impersonation of Tomoaki Araide demonstrates how deeply she can sustain an assumed identity.
Yukiko uses makeup, hair, clothing, physical presentation, and acting to become someone else. When another voice is needed, she may combine her work with Hiroshi Agasa's voice-changing technology or other assistance.
Vermouth's vocal mimicry is a separate mystery. Their shared training does not establish that Toichi taught her that particular ability.
Their purposes also differ. Yukiko uses her abilities to shelter allies and enable escapes, whereas Vermouth uses them to get close to targets and acquire information. Similar techniques acquire warmth or menace depending on what the person using them intends.
The movie reveals that Toichi is Yukiko's brother-in-law
The Million-dollar Pentagram reveals that Toichi and Yusaku Kudo are twin brothers, with Toichi the elder twin. In that movie revelation, Yukiko's former teacher is also her husband's brother, and Kaito and Shinichi are cousins.
The family connection adds a new layer to an old teacher-student relationship. It does not establish that Yukiko knew about the kinship when she originally studied with Toichi.
It is also unclear whether Vermouth knows that the brothers are related or that Toichi is alive. The movie's revelation does not tell us when, or whether, she learned either secret.
When did Yukiko learn Vermouth's identity?

Yukiko does not know Sharon's secret during the New York case, and she subsequently believes the public announcement of Sharon's death. By the operation in Volume 42, she knows that Sharon, Chris, and Vermouth are the same person.
The exact moment when Conan explained the truth to Yukiko is not shown. By the Volume 42 operation, however, she knows whom she is helping him oppose.
In New York, she still trusts Sharon as her friend
During Shinichi Kudo's New York Case, Yukiko visits with Shinichi and Ran and reunites with Sharon. Their conversation shows the familiarity of actresses who have known each other for years.
During the New York case, Vermouth also disguises herself as a serial killer in an attempt to draw out Shuichi Akai. Yukiko is unaware of her friend's involvement in that dangerous operation.
The contrast between Yukiko's trust and Sharon's hidden activity makes the reunion unsettling in retrospect. Shinichi and Ran then save Vermouth's life, creating a personal bond beyond the fact that Shinichi is Yukiko's son.
The case consequently matters both to the women's friendship and to Vermouth's later view of Shinichi as a potential silver bullet against the Organization.
Yukiko believed Sharon had died
When Sharon's death is publicly announced, Yukiko believes she has lost her friend. The public then sees Chris Vineyard, supposedly Sharon's daughter, continuing in her own identity.
In reality, Sharon and Chris are the same woman. Vermouth has staged the mother's death while maintaining the fiction of two generations. Yukiko does not initially see through that mother-daughter performance.
Discovering that a lost friend is alive could have been a happy reunion. Here, the discovery also reveals her association with a deadly organization. That makes even the memories of their earlier friendship harder to interpret.
She knows by the full-moon confrontation in Volume 42
By the events of Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night, Yukiko knows the truth about Sharon, Chris, and Vermouth. Conan seeks her assistance, and she contributes disguise work to the operation.
The story does not show Conan giving Yukiko a complete explanation of Vermouth's secrets. Her involvement in the operation nevertheless shows that she knows about the deception by this point.
Whatever affection remains for Sharon, she chooses to protect her son. Her position as a mother and ally of Conan takes precedence over continuing to trust a former friend associated with the threat to him.
Afterward, she works against Vermouth's plans
Yukiko becomes an active supporter of Conan's efforts to conceal his identity and protect Haibara. Her acting and disguise skills repeatedly contribute to those plans.
She understands Haibara's situation as Sherry, who escaped the Organization, and joins the Mystery Train operation to help her survive. This is not merely support for her own son at a distance.
Both women know the other's abilities and habits. What once supported a friendship now gives them insight into an opponent's methods. Intimacy becomes a tactical advantage, which is part of what makes their rivalry uncomfortable.
Former friends confront each other on the Mystery Train

The Jet-Black Mystery Train in Volume 78 places the two women face to face as opponents who understand each other's current roles. It is not their first meeting; they had known each other for years.
What distinguishes this encounter is that Yukiko knows Sharon is Vermouth, while Vermouth knows Yukiko is working with Conan. Their old friendship is placed directly against Haibara's immediate need for protection.
Yukiko boards to help protect Haibara
Yukiko boards the Bell Tree Express to help protect Ai Haibara from the Black Organization. Vermouth and Bourbon believe Sherry is on the train and plan to corner her.
Conan's side uses disguise and deception to make the Organization believe Sherry has died while keeping Haibara alive. Yukiko contributes her performance skills to that larger operation, which also uses Kaito Kid's disguise ability.
The technique associated with Toichi's teaching is thus part of the contest on both sides. For Yukiko, the stakes remove any doubt about where her loyalty lies: her former friend cannot take priority over the life of a girl being hunted.
Vermouth points a gun and tells her to stop
In compartment E of car six, Vermouth points a pistol at Yukiko and warns her to withdraw. She indicates that she has already understood the plan Yukiko is helping carry out.
This is a threat from an adversary who recognizes the other woman's operational role, not harmless banter between friends. Yet Vermouth initially uses a warning rather than immediately firing.
Lingering friendship is one possible reason for that choice, but operational convenience is another. The scene does not justify a simple claim that she is too fond of Yukiko to harm her.
The bitter fact is that their relationship has reached the point of a gun being raised. The restraint remains meaningful precisely because it exists alongside such a real threat.
Shared affection cannot erase opposing objectives
Yukiko is trying to save Haibara, while Vermouth is trying to eliminate Sherry. Those objectives cannot be reconciled simply by remembering their acting careers together.
Each woman's knowledge of the other sharpens the contest. Yukiko anticipates Vermouth's moves, while Vermouth reads the disguises and planning used against her. Familiarity makes the confrontation more precise.
Vermouth's treatment of Yukiko can still seem different from her coldness toward other targets. Their shared past may retain emotional force, but it has not restored them to the same side. The relationship contains understanding as well as hostility, and that makes it more painful than simple hatred.
A new contest in Yusaku Kudo's Detective Show

In Volumes 99-100, Vermouth approaches the Kudo Residence under Rum's instructions to assess Yusaku and investigate the household. Yukiko and Yusaku, meanwhile, notice that someone is watching them and prepare their own response.
The contest moves from the immediate danger aboard a train to a quieter struggle over information, performance, and whose deception the other side will recognize.
Vermouth disguises herself as Yusaku
The apparent Yusaku who appears before Conan in the later stage of the case is Vermouth. Earlier, Yusaku seems to fall ill with food poisoning, so Yukiko prepares to impersonate him for the detective show with Conan providing the voice.
Yukiko then seems to become ill as well. When another Yusaku appears, Conan interprets him as Kaito Kid in disguise. The actual deception is more elaborate: Vermouth is playing Kid playing Yusaku.
She reproduces more than a face, using manner and voice to encourage the wrong explanation. Her task is to investigate Yusaku's abilities and the people around the Kudo household on Rum's behalf.
Taking the appearance of Yukiko's husband brings Vermouth unnervingly close to her former friend's family. Shared knowledge of disguise and performance makes that intrusion possible.
Yukiko and Yusaku anticipate the surveillance
The Kudo couple are not passive targets. Yukiko has felt that they are being watched, and Yusaku chooses conspicuous behavior to draw a reaction from the observer.
They notice something suspicious in the food and do not eat it. Instead, they pretend to suffer food poisoning, creating an apparent opening for the watcher. The sequence in which both become incapacitated is part of their performance.
They also coordinate with the FBI side, including Akai. The public-facing detective show conceals an attempt to learn how the Organization will approach them.
Each side understands that the other can act convincingly and disguise an appearance. Ordinary assumptions about who is present therefore become unreliable, and the relationship's old familiarity turns into a tool for setting and detecting traps.
Their present relationship extends beyond personal friendship
Vermouth's assignment treats the Kudo family as an investigative target. She uses Yukiko's husband's appearance under orders from Rum, while Yukiko cooperates with Yusaku and the FBI to exploit the surveillance in return.
Vermouth's full report to the Organization is not revealed. Whether she softens her assessment out of affection for the family remains an open question.
At the same time, she continues to keep Shinichi's secret from the Organization. Acting against the family does not mean she hands over everything she knows.
That contradiction is part of her character: an enemy conducting an assignment, yet one who maintains private loyalties and secrets. Whether those tensions become decisive later remains an open question.
Key stories for their relationship

The most useful order is their friendship in New York, the identity revelation, their direct confrontation on the train, and the later investigation of the Kudo family. These correspond to Volumes 34-35, 42, 78, and 99-100.
The episode numbers below distinguish international numbering from the Japanese broadcasts so that the same stories are easier to locate.
Volumes 34-35: Shinichi Kudo's New York Case
Shinichi Kudo's New York Case runs from the eleventh chapter of Volume 34 through the fourth chapter of Volume 35. It is adapted as international Episodes 308-310, corresponding to Japanese episodes 286-288.
Yukiko reunites with Sharon while visiting New York with Shinichi and Ran. The story explains their shared disguise teacher while concealing Vermouth's activity beneath the appearance of an ordinary reunion.
Shinichi and Ran save Vermouth while she is disguised as the serial killer. That event is foundational to her later feelings toward them and cannot be reduced to her friendship with Yukiko alone.
Volume 42: The full-moon identity revelation
Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night is the Volume 42 turning point. Japanese episode 345, a long special, corresponds to international Episodes 371-375.
Sharon and Chris are revealed to be the same person, Vermouth. By the operation, Yukiko knows that truth and assists Conan through disguise work.
The revelation transforms her from a friend of Sharon into an informed participant opposing Vermouth's side. The survival of her former friend cannot be separated from the danger surrounding her son.
Volume 78: The Jet-Black Mystery Train
The Jet-Black Mystery Train is adapted as international Episodes 753-756, corresponding to Japanese episodes 701-704. Yukiko helps Conan's plan to protect Haibara, while Vermouth seeks to eliminate Sherry aboard the train.
Vermouth reads Yukiko's plan, points a gun at her, and tells her to withdraw. Their shared skills and intimate knowledge of each other's habits make the confrontation particularly sharp.
This is the clearest illustration that their relationship is not simply a fond memory of former friendship. The history is still present, but it now shapes an adversarial struggle.
Volumes 99-100: Yusaku Kudo's Detective Show
Yusaku Kudo's Detective Show spans the eleventh chapter of Volume 99 through the second chapter of Volume 100. The adaptation is international Episodes 1128-1129, or Japanese episodes 1071-1072.
Vermouth impersonates Yusaku while suggesting that Kid is the person beneath the disguise. She is investigating on Rum's instructions, while the Kudo couple feign illness to draw out their watcher.
It is not another direct, face-to-face conversation between Yukiko and Vermouth. It nevertheless shows how their shared understanding of performance, disguise, and each other's abilities now operates within a larger strategic conflict.
Conclusion
Yukiko's close actress friend Sharon Vineyard is Vermouth, and Sharon's supposed daughter Chris is the same person. The discovery places a past friendship against Yukiko's need to protect Conan and Haibara.
Their common teacher, Toichi Kuroba, links their exceptional disguise skills, but those skills now serve opposing purposes. The distance between an affectionate reunion and a pistol raised on a train is a bitter one.
Vermouth's restraint leaves room for lingering emotion without proving that she can never harm Yukiko. They remain enemies who understand each other unusually well and cannot easily discard the time they shared.
