Does Tooru Amuro know that Conan is Shinichi Kudo?
When does his suspicion become a confirmed discovery?
Tooru Amuro has long recognized that Conan Edogawa is no ordinary elementary school student. Conan’s deductions, his role behind Sleeping Kogoro, and his ties to the FBI give Amuro plenty of reasons to investigate him.
Volume 107 turns that accumulated suspicion into a specific answer: Conan is Shinichi Kudo. The important distinction is between recognizing the person and understanding every detail of the drug that changed his body.
Spoiler warning: This article discusses the identity revelation in overall File 1136 and subsequent manga material through File 1166. Dialogue below is paraphrased rather than quoted from an official English edition.
Amuro Knows Conan Is Shinichi: The Revelation in Volume 107
Amuro explicitly reaches the conclusion that Conan and Shinichi are the same person in Volume 107, File 3—overall File 1136, A Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter.
It concludes the three-chapter sequence covering Files 1134–1136. Earlier films, suspicions, and the Kudo residence tea party are relevant context, but this manga scene supplies the explicit identification. As of the July 22, 2026 coverage date, this scene had not yet been adapted into the anime.
Volume 107, File 3: The Answer in Overall File 1136
The three-chapter case recalls an encounter seven years earlier between the police-academy group and the then-elementary-school-aged Shinichi and Ran.
For Rei Furuya, it is a memory from his police-academy days. Conan knows the same incident, despite presently appearing to be a first grader. Connecting the child in the old memory with the child before him resolves the discrepancy.
The clue is not simply that Conan is clever. It is that his identity and remembered experience fit Shinichi’s history in a way his apparent present age cannot explain. A thread that begins with Amuro’s early interest finally reaches a named conclusion.
The Decisive Link Is the Shinichi He Met Seven Years Earlier
Amuro had already noticed the resemblance between Conan and Shinichi. Their reasoning, determination to intervene in cases, and proximity to Ran and the Kudo family made the comparison suggestive.
Resemblance alone would not prove identity. His own memory provides the final link, and his internal conclusion expressly identifies the present boy as Shinichi Kudo.
Neither Rum nor an intelligence report simply hands him the answer. A personal encounter from years earlier allows him to reinterpret everything he has observed. That makes the reveal both a deduction and a return to his own past.
What He Establishes Is “Conan Is Shinichi”—Not the Entire Drug Mystery
The revelation establishes identity. It does not show Amuro learning that Gin administered APTX 4869, how the shrinking effect works, or how a temporary antidote restores Shinichi.
Nor does it automatically establish his knowledge of Haibara’s transformation, the complete circle of people protecting Conan’s secret, or every detail known to Professor Agasa and the Kudos.
The name and the mechanism are separate discoveries. Treating them as one would give Amuro information the story has not shown him obtaining.
How Amuro’s Suspicions Develop
Amuro does not arrive in the story already knowing Conan is Shinichi. His initial approach centers on Kogoro, then shifts toward the boy whose actions repeatedly influence the famous detective’s cases.
His assessment of Conan grows from an unusual child to a capable participant in operations involving the FBI and the Organization.
Volume 75 / Japanese Episodes 667–668: Approaching Kogoro
Amuro debuts in Wedding Eve (Part 1) and Wedding Eve (Part 2), international episodes 719–720 (Japanese episodes 667–668), presents himself as a private detective, and becomes Kogoro Mouri’s apprentice. He subsequently works at Café Poirot beneath the Mouri Detective Agency.
His real name is Rei Furuya, a public security officer undercover in the Black Organization as Bourbon. Those identities explain why his apparently friendly arrival carries larger stakes.
At this stage, however, his principal approach is to the celebrated Kogoro. The story does not depict him already identifying Conan as Shinichi.
Volume 78 / Japanese Episodes 705–706: Noticing Conan Behind Sleeping Kogoro
Amuro catches Conan about to use his Stun-Gun Wristwatch on Kogoro. Conan covers for the suspicious action, but Amuro has seen enough to become more interested in what the boy is doing behind the detective’s back.
The pair of episodes ends with Bourbon Figures It Out, international episode 758 (Japanese episode 706). Amuro’s later phone conversation with Vermouth expresses renewed interest in Sleeping Kogoro, while the context directs attention to Conan’s hidden contribution.
This does not prove that he has reconstructed every part of the Sleeping Kogoro method. It does show the focus of suspicion shifting from the public detective toward the child beside him.
Volumes 80–81 / Japanese Episode 734: Recognizing a Formidable Opponent
In Jodie’s Memories and the Cherry Blossom Viewing Trap (1 Hour Special), international episodes 786–787, Amuro and Vermouth probe FBI contacts while investigating Akai’s apparent death.
Conan’s involvement demonstrates that he can anticipate their moves and operate with the FBI. Amuro describes him in terms that recognize how formidable the boy is.
The evaluation concerns capability, not yet the name Shinichi Kudo. Amuro understands the danger Conan poses to an operation before he understands the personal history behind that ability.
Volumes 84–85 / Japanese Episodes 779–783: The Scarlet Storyline
Amuro investigates Akai’s apparent death at Raiha Pass and suspects Subaru Okiya is Akai. The Scarlet counter-operation temporarily dispels that identification for him; it should not be described as the point at which he fully confirms Okiya’s identity. The later Betrayal storyline changes that understanding.
During Scarlet, Conan’s role in the FBI’s elaborate deception nevertheless becomes clear to Amuro. A supposed first grader is helping adults conduct a sophisticated operation against an undercover Organization member.
Conan also recognizes Amuro’s public security affiliation. Both move closer to the other’s concealed role, but Amuro has not yet reached the specific conclusion that Conan is Shinichi.
Volumes 86–87 / Japanese Episodes 810–812: Kuroda Already Knows Conan’s Reputation
In the prefectural police case, Hyoue Kuroda tells Conan that people at the National Police Agency have described him as the intelligence supporting Sleeping Kogoro. The Darkness of the Prefectural Police (Part 3), Japanese episode 812, maps to international episode 867.
This establishes that Conan’s abilities are discussed beyond the people he personally knows. It does not identify Amuro as the source of Kuroda’s information.
Kuroda’s authority over Furuya and the route by which he learned about Conan are separate matters. The former cannot be used to invent a particular report that the story has not shown.
The Investigations into Shinichi and Conan Converge
Amuro receives an order from Rum to investigate Shinichi and a separate order from a mysterious elderly man to investigate Conan. Volume 107 reveals that the two subjects are one person.
The requests create the investigative background; Amuro’s memory supplies the decisive connection.
Volume 95 / Japanese Episodes 952–954: Rum Orders an Investigation into Shinichi
After Shinichi’s public appearance during the school trip, information about his survival attracts the Organization’s attention. Rum orders Bourbon to investigate him.
Amuro examines the people around Ran and the Kudo family and enters the Kudo residence, where he encounters Akai. The case culminates in the tea-party scene. The Unsolved Cocktail Case (Part Three), Japanese episode 954, maps to international episode 1011.
The subject of Rum’s order is Shinichi. The scene does not establish that Amuro already knows the boy called Conan is that same person.
There Is No Evidence the Tea Party Revealed Conan’s Identity to Him
The tea party involves Amuro, Akai, Yusaku, and Yukiko. Its full conversation remains unrevealed through File 1166.
Cooperation, a negotiated arrangement, and the handling of Akai’s survival are possible topics. No depicted exchange establishes that Yusaku told Amuro Conan was Shinichi.
Indeed, Amuro’s later realization in Volume 107 would be difficult to reconcile with already having received that answer. The tea party is therefore treated as an unresolved cooperation-related scene, not the confirmed identity reveal.
Volume 105 / File 1115: A Mysterious Elderly Man Orders an Investigation into Conan
In File 1115, a cane-carrying elderly man tells Amuro to investigate Conan thoroughly. This is a separate line of inquiry from Rum’s order about Shinichi.
Amuro subsequently gathers information around the Detective Boys, including the use of a listening device on Mitsuhiko.
The man’s identity, affiliation, and objective remain unknown in the chapters covered here. He should not be called a confirmed public security superior, Karasuma associate, or Rum associate merely because he can issue this request. He is also distinct from the other elderly figure seen with a respirator.
Volume 107, Files 1–3: A Personal Memory Supplies the Missing Piece
The remembered encounter brings Furuya and his police-academy friends together with the young Shinichi and Ran. Conan’s relationship to that memory creates the final contradiction with his apparent age.
Rum’s order, the elderly man’s surveillance request, Conan’s deductions, and the FBI connection all form the groundwork. None replaces the specific memory that lets Amuro identify him.
An investigation involving large organizations ends, at this stage, with the significance of a single encounter years earlier.
Volume 107, Files 8–10: Amuro Does Not Tell Conan What He Knows
When they meet again in the later case in Volume 107, Amuro does not announce that he has identified Conan as Shinichi. His outward manner remains familiar.
Conan is likewise not clearly shown realizing that his identity has been discovered. The absence of an immediate confrontation creates an imbalance beneath their normal conversation.
This is not proof of every future intention Amuro has. It is the observable behavior following the discovery: he knows more than he says.
How Much of Conan’s Secret Does Amuro Know?
The confirmed conclusion must be kept narrow enough to match the evidence. Conan’s identity, the drug’s mechanism, Haibara’s identity, and onward reporting are four different questions.
Answering the first does not automatically answer the other three.
He Knows Conan and Shinichi Are the Same Person
File 1136 provides an explicit identification, supported by the connection with the earlier encounter. This is no longer merely a theory that Amuro finds Conan unusually intelligent.
The story does not show him assigning a precise biological age to Conan’s present body or explaining the physical process to himself. Those details should not be added to his deduction.
His Knowledge of APTX 4869 and Shrinking Is Unestablished
The scenes discussed here do not show Amuro learning the full chain from Gin administering the drug to the rare shrinking effect, Haibara’s antidote research, and temporary reversions to Shinichi.
Being undercover in the Organization does not grant access to every research secret. An intelligence operative can correctly identify a person without yet understanding the extraordinary means by which that person’s appearance changed.
The cause remains a separate investigative question from the identity.
There Is No Confirmed Discovery That Haibara Is Shiho
Amuro has important connections to the Miyano family, including childhood encounters with Elena, and participates in the Mystery Train operation against Sherry.
Those connections do not establish that he knows Ai Haibara is Shiho Miyano. Discovering one transformed person does not automatically reveal another.
The extent of his knowledge about Haibara should therefore be assessed from her own scenes and evidence, not imported from the Conan revelation.
No Report to Rum, Kuroda, or the Elderly Man Is Shown Within the Source Cutoff
Through manga File 1166, Amuro is not shown disclosing Conan’s identity to a third party.
The recipients would have very different implications: Rum is the Organization’s second-in-command; Kuroda gives Furuya instructions on the public security side; the elderly man’s affiliation is unknown.
A report to one cannot be presumed to reach all three. Nor does the absence of a shown report prove that no private action is possible. The limited statement is that the chapters covered here has not depicted such a disclosure.
Amuro and Conan Cooperate While Carrying Each Other’s Secrets
Conan already knows the concealed roles behind Amuro’s friendly public face. After Volume 107, Amuro also knows the identity behind Conan’s appearance.
They can cooperate without sharing every motive, piece of information, or future obligation.
Conan Knows Amuro Is Bourbon and Rei Furuya
Tooru Amuro is the public alias used as a private detective and Café Poirot employee. Rei Furuya is his real name and public security identity. Bourbon is his Organization codename.
Conan recognizes the public security connection through the Scarlet storyline. Their later relationship therefore involves two people who understand that the other’s outward role is not the whole truth.
That mutual awareness is different from either of them having a complete account of everything the other knows.
Their Exchange About Lying Reflects Mutual Recognition
After Scarlet, Conan calls Amuro a liar, and Amuro responds, in effect, that Conan is hardly the person to say that. The exchange acknowledges that both have concealed important information.
At that earlier point, Amuro recognizes Conan’s involvement in the Akai deception but has not yet established that he is Shinichi.
The line should therefore be read within its original stage of knowledge. Volume 107 adds later significance without retroactively turning it into an earlier identity confirmation.
Knowing the Identity Does Not Resolve Every Conflict of Interest
Furuya’s work is directed toward protecting Japan, and he often shares Conan’s objective of opposing the Organization. That makes him a valuable ally, but not someone free of competing responsibilities.
He must maintain his undercover position as Bourbon while operating near Conan as Amuro. What he reports, withholds, or investigates may be shaped by those roles.
Discovery alone does not prove unconditional alignment on every decision. The tension comes from protection and investigation existing within the same person.
The Films Reinforce Their Relationship Rather Than Supply the Explicit Reveal
The films show both unusual clues about Conan’s age and significant trust between him and Amuro. They should be distinguished from the explicit manga conclusion in File 1136.
A suggestive scene or a confidential exchange is not automatically a declaration that Amuro knows the name Shinichi Kudo.
The Bride of Halloween: A Memory That Does Not Fit Conan’s Apparent Age
The film links Conan with a childhood encounter involving Kenji Hagiwara. This personal memory is distinct from the main Plamya incident recounted by Furuya, which took place three years earlier.
The important observation is that Conan refers to experience difficult to reconcile with his apparent age. The film does not depict Amuro expressly concluding that Conan is Shinichi.
After reading Volume 107, the scene can feel like thematic preparation for the later deduction. That is an interpretation, not proof that the deduction already occurred in the film.
Black Iron Submarine: Sharing Organization Intelligence
Amuro gives Conan information about Pinga and the developments around Pacific Buoy, treating him as someone capable of acting on sensitive Organization-related information.
The cooperation demonstrates trust far beyond an ordinary adult’s interaction with a first grader. It does not, by itself, identify which parts of Conan’s personal history Amuro knows.
The film supports their working relationship; the identity conclusion is a separate claim.
The Explicit Manga Reference Remains Volume 107, File 3
The Bride of Halloween provides an age-related clue, and Black Iron Submarine shows cooperation. Neither replaces the direct identification in overall File 1136.
Keeping those layers separate makes the timeline clear: earlier scenes establish intelligence, suspicion, and trust; the manga reveal supplies the specific answer.
Conclusion
Amuro knows Conan is Shinichi, with the explicit revelation occurring in Volume 107, File 3 / overall File 1136. The final link is his memory of meeting Shinichi years earlier.
That does not mean he understands every aspect of APTX 4869, knows Haibara’s identity, or has been shown reporting Conan’s secret to others. Those remain separate questions through File 1166.
His outward behavior stays calm after the discovery. The resulting tension lies beneath ordinary conversation: one familiar face now knows more about another than he chooses to reveal.
