The age-33 theory spread because the weekly serialization used the phrase “18 years ago.” The family chronology places Akai at age 15 around the time of the Koji Haneda case.
In the earlier version, Okiya reflected that 18 years had passed. Because the quotation has no registered official English wording in the available quote table, it is best rendered here only as a paraphrase rather than as an official quotation.
Taken literally, the earlier calculation was 15 plus 18, producing age 33.
That made contemporary explanations of age 33 reasonable. The conclusion came from a line in the manga, not simply from Akai’s appearance. However, that older reference does not match the later 17-year chronology, so it should not be treated as the current figure.
Volume 98 and the Anime Use the 17-Year Chronology
Volume 98 uses the revised interval of 17 years, and the anime adaptation follows that later chronology.
If Shuichi was 15 then, 15 plus 17 makes him 32 now. This revision also places Tsutomu Akai’s disappearance, Mary Sera’s actions, and the Akai family’s move to Japan on a shared timeline.
