Her revealed identity is Rachel Asaka, Amanda Hughes’s bodyguard at the hotel incident seventeen years ago. Wakasa was presented as a Rum candidate, but she is not Rum. She is pursuing Rum and the Black Organization after the deaths of Amanda and Koji Haneda.
This article examines Wakasa’s identity, Rachel Asaka’s past, her ties to Koji and Rum, and how much she may know about Conan and Ai Haibara.
Rumi Wakasa’s True Identity Is Rachel Asaka
Rumi Wakasa is revealed to be the bodyguard who used the name Rachel Asaka while serving Amanda Hughes seventeen years ago.
Wakasa is now thirty-seven and works as an assistant homeroom teacher at Teitan Elementary School. Her public persona is awkward and accident-prone, but she actually possesses sharp deductive skills and enough combat ability to overwhelm several adults.
It remains unclear whether Rachel Asaka was her birth name. She received witness protection when she was young, so her name may have changed before or during that part of her life. The evidence discussed here does not resolve the question.
The contrast is central to her character: the supposedly helpless teacher is a survivor of a Black Organization case and an elite bodyguard. Once her background is known, even small gestures from her debut begin to look calculated rather than accidental.
Her Connections to Hyoue Kuroda and Tsutomu Akai
Rachel Asaka is connected to both Hyoue Kuroda and Tsutomu Akai through the events surrounding the hotel case.
Kuroda encountered Asaka at the hotel and initially regarded her as a dangerous person connected to the incident. He ultimately helped her escape the Black Organization. That fact changes how their present-day tension can be read: Kuroda was not an Organization ally hunting her, but someone who aided her survival.
Asaka also came into contact with Tsutomu Akai after the incident. Tsutomu was investigating Koji Haneda’s murder. However, the evidence discussed here does not establish how far his assistance went, whether they remained in contact, or what relationship they may have now.
Following Wakasa’s past leads beyond the hotel to Kuroda, Tsutomu, and indirectly to Shuichi Akai, but the exact present-day links remain unresolved. She appears to be pursuing revenge alone, yet her history places her near the center of several major forces in the story.
She Is Not Rum but Seeks Revenge Against the Black Organization
Rumi Wakasa is not Rum. Rum is Kanenori Wakita, while Wakasa is one of the people seeking revenge against him.
Early in her story, Wakasa stood beside Kuroda and Wakita as one of the principal Rum candidates. Her impaired right eye, extraordinary strength, and knowledge connected to the Black Organization made her allegiance difficult to judge.
The account of the seventeen-year-old incident instead identifies her as Asaka, Amanda’s bodyguard and a victim of the Organization’s actions. Amanda and Koji were taken from her, giving her a personal reason to target Rum.
That does not make her an uncomplicated ally. The chapters discussed here depict a period when she was willing to endanger people around her and accept possible casualties if doing so advanced her revenge. Conan and Wakasa may oppose the same enemy, but they do not necessarily accept the same methods.
Wakasa is outside the Black Organization without automatically standing on Conan’s side. Cooperation is possible because their target overlaps, yet Conan prioritizes saving lives while revenge has long dominated Wakasa’s choices.
Does Rumi Wakasa Know Conan’s Identity?

She has repeatedly given him opportunities to solve cases and has observed behavior a normal first grader could not explain.
Wakasa possesses an APTX 4869 test-subject list and reacted to Shinichi Kudo’s name. She has also allowed Conan’s use of the Stun-Gun Wristwatch to pass without confrontation. These details could allow her to suspect a connection between Conan and a de-aged Shinichi.
Until the story states or demonstrates that conclusion, Wakasa should not be counted among the characters confirmed to know Conan’s identity.
Conclusion: Her Knowledge of Conan as Shinichi Is Unconfirmed
Wakasa’s own identity as Rachel Asaka is established, but her knowledge of Conan’s identity remains unconfirmed. She has never addressed Conan as Shinichi Kudo, nor has she directly stated that APTX 4869 can make an adult appear as a child.
At the same time, she understands Conan’s deductive skill, decisive role in cases, and concealed use of the Stun-Gun Wristwatch. It is strongly implied that she does not regard him as an ordinary student.
The safest description is that Wakasa may be close to Conan’s secret, not that she has been confirmed to know Conan is Shinichi. She may already have formed the correct theory internally, but her habit of withholding both knowledge and intent leaves the decisive step unseen.

The strongest stated reason for Wakasa’s interest in Shinichi is her possession of the APTX 4869 test-subject list.
After news spread that Shinichi Kudo was alive following the school trip, Wakasa examined the list and reacted to his name. The drug is responsible for the de-aging of Shinichi and Shiho Miyano, and the list records people who received it.
Seeing a supposedly dead Shinichi reported alive could reasonably make Wakasa consider his survival and the drug’s effects. Even so, knowing Shinichi survived is separate from identifying the child in front of her as Shinichi.
The list alone does not provide the missing identification. Its origin is also unresolved: the evidence discussed here does not determine whether Wakasa stole it from the Organization, received it from another person, or obtained it through some other investigation.
The list brings Wakasa closer to the secret, but both the path by which she obtained it and the conclusion she drew from it remain open questions.
She Draws Conan into Cases and Tests His Deductive Skill
Wakasa repeatedly involves Conan in cases, supplies useful clues, and watches how he reasons. In The New Teacher’s Skeleton Case, she leads the Detective Boys to a school storage room and creates the conditions for Conan to tackle the code.
In the case involving the woman with white hands, she invites Conan and the others to her home after behaving as though she anticipated trouble next door. She also relays a professional golfer’s disturbing words, giving Conan another piece needed to move his deduction forward.

In the burning-tent case, Wakasa again indicates a clue, this time using a balancing toy for Conan and Kuroda. She is capable of reasoning for herself, which makes her repeated choice to pass information to Conan especially significant.
Her purpose may have included measuring how Conan organizes information and how close he can come to a hidden truth. That does not prove she knew he was Shinichi from the outset. She may instead have been judging whether he could become an ally against Rum or help solve the Koji Haneda case.
She Saw the Stun-Gun Wristwatch and Remained Silent
During Picking Wild Plants and Clovers, Wakasa is positioned to see Conan use the Stun-Gun Wristwatch. Conan tranquilizes Inspector Yamamura so he can present the deduction through the sleeping officer, yet Wakasa does not interrogate Conan afterward.
That sequence supports the narrower conclusion that she knows Conan has a hidden investigative role. Watching both the gadget and the deduction would give her ample reason to recognize that he is directing the solution.
Her silence looks deliberate, but it is not proof that she has identified him as Shinichi. What can safely be said is that Wakasa has seen beneath Conan’s ordinary-child persona and chooses to keep observing him.
Other characters who notice Conan’s secrets may confront or assist him; Wakasa’s distinctive response is to watch without explaining what she knows.
Why Did Rumi Wakasa Come to Teitan Elementary School?
Wakasa has not personally disclosed her real reason for taking a position at Teitan Elementary School.
Yusaku Kudo, Shuichi Akai, and Conan infer that she may have used the Koji Haneda case website to locate people investigating the murder, leading her toward Hiroshi Agasa’s computer and Conan.
After arriving, she repeatedly tests Conan through criminal cases. That pattern makes a purposeful approach more plausible than a purely accidental assignment, but her exact objective remains a theory within the story.
She Is Believed to Have Maintained the Koji Haneda Case Website
Wakasa is strongly suspected of being the person who posted information about Koji Haneda’s murder online, repeatedly updating and deleting it.
The unresolved hotel case left Koji and Amanda dead, while Asaka disappeared from the scene and became a person of interest. Yusaku and the others reason that the surviving Asaka may have created the website and watched its visitors for signs of investigators or Black Organization members.
Under that theory, the online information functioned as bait for both people seeking the truth and people who wanted the evidence erased.
Wakasa has not admitted that she operated the site. The site operator is strongly implied to be Wakasa, but this is not confirmed.
The Theory That Access Records Led Her to Agasa and Conan
Yusaku’s side of the investigation suggests that Wakasa may have checked access records for the Koji Haneda website and noticed Hiroshi Agasa’s computer.
Conan repeatedly accessed the website from Agasa’s computer while investigating the old case. If Wakasa monitored its visitors, Agasa would have been an obvious lead. Looking more closely at his circle could then have brought Conan to her attention as the person actually pursuing the mystery.
Wakasa subsequently joined Class 1-B, where she could observe Conan and make him solve several cases. Still, the evidence discussed here does not establish that Conan alone was her original target. She may have intended to investigate Agasa, Ai Haibara, the Detective Boys, or the wider group around the professor.
Without Wakasa’s own explanation, her route to the school remains unclear. Her conduct after arriving nevertheless shows sustained interest in Conan’s unusual ability.
She May Have Viewed Conan as a Strong Move Against Rum
Wakasa may have been assessing whether Conan possessed the intelligence needed to oppose Rum. She can solve cases herself, yet repeatedly gives Conan information and waits for him to reach the answer.
The bishop entrusted to her by Koji is a piece that can influence the board from a distance. Conan may similarly have appeared to her as a powerful move capable of pressuring Rum from a position different from her own.
Wakasa may initially have regarded Conan less as a child to protect than as a capable person she could use. That interpretation fits the depiction in these chapters of her willingness to place others in danger for revenge, but it is not a confirmed statement of her private motive.
Later manga material shows her choosing to protect Conan. This can be read as a shift from evaluating his usefulness toward valuing his life, though the full meaning of that change remains open.
Rumi Wakasa’s Relationship with Ai Haibara and Shiho Miyano
Wakasa shows strong interest in Ai Haibara, but there is no conclusive scene proving that she knows Ai is Shiho Miyano.
Her possession of the APTX 4869 test-subject list and her knowledge related to the Black Organization give her a basis for suspicion. She may suspect that Ai’s age and identity are connected to the drug, but suspicion is not the same as confirmed recognition.
In later manga material, Ai challenges Wakasa’s dangerous thinking, and her words influence Wakasa’s choice. Even without an explicit exchange of identities, their emotional distance has changed. Wakasa’s response suggests that Ai is becoming more than an object of observation.

The teacher introduced as timid and clumsy looks very different on a reread. Actions that first appear to be mistakes can instead be understood as deliberate prompts designed to make Conan investigate.

Wakasa first appears in Volume 91, Files 7-9, adapted as The New Teacher’s Skeleton Case (Part 1) and The New Teacher’s Skeleton Case (Part 2). These are Episodes 944-945 (Japanese episodes 889-890).
She arrives as Class 1-B’s assistant homeroom teacher, bumping into objects, acting frightened, and asking the children for help. Behind that presentation, she knows about the code and the incident in the school storage room and guides the Detective Boys toward investigating it.
When faced with a dangerous opponent, she displays fighting ability that is incompatible with her helpless persona. After her identity is revealed, her supposed fear can instead be read as a possible way of observing Conan’s response.
The Wristwatch Sighting: Volume 97 and Episodes 1068-1069
Wakasa sees Conan use the Stun-Gun Wristwatch in Volume 97, Files 7-9, adapted as Picking Wild Plants and Clovers (Part 1) and Picking Wild Plants and Clovers (Part 2). These are Episodes 1068-1069 (Japanese episodes 1011-1012).
The story also connects Wakasa’s memories of Koji to the bishop she treasures. During the solution, Conan uses the watch on Inspector Yamamura, and Wakasa witnesses the concealed method without challenging him.
The episode can support the interpretation that Wakasa begins evaluating Conan as someone useful to the seventeen-year-old case. It still does not establish that she has identified him as Shinichi.
The Identity Account: Volume 104 and Episodes 1222-1225
Wakasa’s identity and the hotel case are explained in Volume 104, Files 4-7. The anime sequence runs from The 17-Year-Old Truth (The Bloody Knight) to The 17-Year-Old Truth (The Queen’s Gambit), Episodes 1222-1225 (Japanese episodes 1164-1167).
The account brings Amanda Hughes, Rachel Asaka, Koji Haneda, Rum, and Hyoue Kuroda together at the hotel. It explains that Wakasa served as Amanda’s bodyguard, received the bishop from Koji, and escaped with Kuroda’s help.
The revelations reorganize earlier clues involving Wakasa’s right eye, scars, strength, bishop, and hostility toward Rum. They answer the central identity question while exposing the losses that have driven her isolation and revenge.
Later Manga Development Through Volume 108 and File 1166
Wakasa’s story continues after the account of her identity. Volume 108 brings her long conflict with Rum into direct present-day contact and the manga through File 1166 shows her choosing to protect Conan and Ms. Kobayashi.
As of July 20, 2026, the anime had covered the identity account but not the later confrontation with Rum or the emotional development through File 1166.
Within the film coverage discussed here, the 2026 movie provides no new information about Wakasa’s identity. That is a movie-only scope statement, not evidence for conclusions about her manga knowledge. The continuing questions remain centered on the manga: how her revenge will end and whether she will ever share what she knows with Conan or Ai.
