When does Conan himself realize that Kanenori Wakita is Rum?
Rum is the Black Organization’s second-in-command, directly below the boss. For years, the story presented three possible identities: Hyoue Kuroda, Rumi Wakasa, and Kanenori Wakita.
This article explains when Wakita is revealed as Rum, when Conan reaches that conclusion, and which manga Files and anime episodes build the mystery. Major spoilers follow.
Rum Is Kanenori Wakita: When Is His Identity Confirmed?
Rum’s public identity is Kanenori Wakita, the sushi chef at Iroha Sushi. He is the Black Organization’s number two and has a prosthetic left eye.
Readers learn the answer in Volume 100, File 1066, while anime viewers learn it in international Episode 1137 (Japanese episode 1079), “The Black Organization’s Scheme (Identity).”

The reveal for the audience and Conan’s own discovery are separate events. That gap keeps Wakita threatening even after readers know the truth: he remains beside the Mouri Detective Agency while Conan still lacks the answer.
This two-stage structure also prevents the episode and File numbers from being treated as interchangeable answers. Volume 100 and Episode 1137 answer when the audience receives the identity, whereas Volume 108, File 1150 answers when Conan’s side reaches the identification inside the story.
The Manga Reveal Is Volume 100, File 1066
Rum’s identity is disclosed to manga readers in Volume 100, File 1066. It is the final File of the FBI serial-attack storyline.
The Black Organization hunts FBI agents hiding in Japan, while Conan Edogawa, Shuichi Akai, and Yusaku Kudo try to keep Andre Camel alive. Rum stays away from the field and directs Gin, Vodka, and the other operatives remotely.
His ability to anticipate the FBI’s decisions establishes him as a dangerous commander before his face is shown. Only after the confrontation ends does the narrative disclose that the man behind those orders is Wakita, the apparently friendly chef working next to Kogoro Mouri.
The Anime Reveal Is Episode 1137 (Japanese Episode 1079)
In the anime, Rum’s identity is revealed in international Episode 1137 (Japanese episode 1079), “The Black Organization’s Scheme (Identity).” It concludes a three-part story:
- Episode 1135 (Japanese episode 1077), “The Black Organization’s Scheme (Hunt)”
- Episode 1136 (Japanese episode 1078), “The Black Organization’s Scheme (Landing)”
- Episode 1137 (Japanese episode 1079), “The Black Organization’s Scheme (Identity)”
Episode 1137 alone supplies the answer, but all three episodes show why Rum is so formidable. His contest of inference with Conan, Akai, and Yusaku gives the final appearance of Wakita much more weight.
The Identity Appears at the End of the Story
Throughout most of the three-part story, Rum sends instructions while remaining unseen. Gin and the others carry weapons in the field, but Rum studies the situation from elsewhere and closes in on the FBI’s escape plan.
The audience first learns to fear Rum’s mind; only after the operation ends does it see Wakita’s face. The twist leaves the danger embedded in ordinary life instead of ending with a dramatic battlefield introduction.
Hyoue Kuroda and Rumi Wakasa Are Not Rum
Of the three central suspects, Wakita is Rum. Kuroda is associated with the Public Security Bureau and is Tooru Amuro’s superior, while Wakasa is Rachel Asaka and stands against the Black Organization.

Volume 100 and Episode 1137 Reveal Rum to the Audience
In Volume 100, File 1066 and international Episode 1137 (Japanese episode 1079), the audience learns that Wakita is Rum. Conan and Akai have not yet identified Rum’s public face at that point.
The audience therefore knows before the protagonist that a senior Black Organization operative is working beside the Mouri Detective Agency. Every ordinary Wakita scene becomes more unsettling because of that information gap.
Conan Had Not Yet Realized Wakita Was Rum
Conan is absent from the final scene that reveals Wakita to the reader, so that information is not automatically shared with him. He knows that Rum is the organization’s number two, has a prosthetic eye, and is described as impatient, but those clues have not yet produced Wakita’s name.
Wakita can continue operating near Conan and Kogoro because Conan has not yet connected the chef to Rum. Camel also brings back a clue, but its meaning becomes useful only later.
Camel’s Clue About a “Silly Name” Becomes Important
After escaping Umizaru Island, Camel reports information he heard from the Organization. It concerns the strange name Rum uses, but it does not identify a specific person at the time.
In Volume 108, that vague clue becomes a reason to reexamine the name Kanenori Wakita. A fragment planted during the FBI operation later joins several independent signs and helps turn suspicion into a conclusion.
WAKITA KANENORI and the “Time Is Money” Anagram
Wakita’s name contains a wordplay clue. Rearranging WAKITA KANENORI produces TOKIWA KANENARI, a romanized phrase meaning “time is money.”
The alias looks ordinary, yet its letters point back to the phrase associated with Rum. Because the name was visible from Wakita’s debut, the solution was hidden in plain sight long before the identity reveal.
Conan Identifies Rum in Volume 108, File 1150
Conan concludes that Wakita is Rum in Volume 108, File 1150. His conclusion does not rest on one clue: Camel’s memory, Wakita’s left eye, speech, name, and Ai Haibara’s reaction converge.
The distinction matters because the audience’s knowledge in Volume 100 did not itself prove what Conan knew. File 1150 is the point at which the protagonist’s side catches up.
Camel Remembers Wakita’s Face and Left-Eye Eyepatch
Andre Camel plays a central role in the deduction. Seeing Wakita’s face and the eyepatch over his left eye reminds Camel of an old man he encountered two years earlier during Akai’s infiltration of the Black Organization.
The resemblance connects Wakita to the encounter that helped derail Akai’s undercover operation. Camel’s painful memory cannot undo that failure, but it now provides a crucial piece of the identification.
Several Anomalies and Haibara’s Reaction Converge
The left-eye eyepatch connects with the information that Rum has a prosthetic eye. Wakita’s stylized speech contains small irregularities, and his name contains the “time is money” wordplay. Haibara has also sensed something associated with the Black Organization around him.
Camel’s memory brings the face, voice, left eye, name, behavior, and Haibara’s response together around the same person. Any one clue might support suspicion; their combination is what moves Conan to certainty.
Conan and Akai Now Know Rum’s Face and Voice
In File 1150, Conan explains his reasoning to Shuichi Akai while Akai is using his Subaru Okiya identity. Conan, Akai, and the FBI side consequently share the conclusion that Wakita is Rum, along with his face, voice, and left-eye characteristic.
This changes the conflict from “Who is Rum?” to “How can they oppose him now that they know?” It does not make the two sides’ knowledge equal: the evidence discussed here does not confirm that Rum knows Conan Edogawa is Shinichi Kudo.
The Anime Has Not Yet Reached This Reveal
As of July 20, 2026, the anime had not adapted File 1150, where Conan identifies Rum. International Episode 1137 (Japanese episode 1079) reveals Wakita to viewers, and Episodes 1222-1225 (Japanese episodes 1164-1167) cover the incident from seventeen years earlier.
The anime audience knows Wakita’s identity, but anime-continuity Conan has not yet reached the deduction described in Volume 108. Readers who want that logical payoff must continue with the manga.
The distinction is therefore about viewpoint as well as adaptation progress. An episode can disclose Wakita’s secret to viewers without giving Conan the same information, while the later manga deduction records the point when his own evidence is assembled.
Highlights of Episodes 1135-1137
Episode 1137 supplies the identity, but Episodes 1135-1137 show Rum’s full tactical threat. The Black Organization becomes the hunter, targeting FBI agents operating in Japan.
Episode 1135: “Hunt” Begins the Attacks on the FBI
International Episode 1135 (Japanese episode 1077), “The Black Organization’s Scheme (Hunt),” begins with killings targeting foreigners. The victims are not random: Black Organization operatives are hunting FBI agents in Japan.
The FBI’s coded communications are analyzed by the enemy. Agents who normally pursue the Organization are forced into the position of prey, while Rum coordinates the hunt and Gin’s team executes it.
Episode 1136: “Landing” Traps Camel on Umizaru Island
In international Episode 1136 (Japanese episode 1078), “The Black Organization’s Scheme (Landing),” Camel escapes to Umizaru Island. He tries to make his plunge into the sea look fatal, but the Organization does not withdraw.
Conan, Akai, and the FBI guide Camel from a distance. He must evade the search while also preventing the Organization from becoming certain that he survived. The island’s sea and forest turn into a confined hunting ground.
Episode 1137: “Identity” Pits Yusaku Kudo Against Rum
International Episode 1137 (Japanese episode 1079), “The Black Organization’s Scheme (Identity),” centers on a contest of prediction between Yusaku and Rum. Yusaku searches for a route that will bring Camel home, while Rum anticipates the FBI’s plan and directs Gin.
Camel survives, but the episode does not suggest that the power imbalance has vanished. After the rescue, the disclosure of Wakita as Rum converts relief into a new threat.
Rum’s Unseen Command Is What Makes Him Frightening
Rum does not personally search the island with a gun. He directs Gin, Vodka, Chianti, and Korn, analyzes the FBI’s code and escape plan, and predicts their next actions.
By the time Wakita’s face appears, Rum has already been established as a dangerous strategist. The approachable sushi chef and the cold commander are the same person, and his workplace gives him ordinary access to Conan’s circle.
Volume 104 and Episodes 1222-1225 Explain Rum’s Past and Left Eye
Volume 104 and international Episodes 1222-1225 (Japanese episodes 1164-1167) depict Rum seventeen years earlier and the exceptional memory associated with his left eye. They connect the deaths of Koji Haneda and Amanda Hughes with Wakasa, Kuroda, and the Akai family.
Rum Acts During the Koji Haneda Case Seventeen Years Ago
Seventeen years earlier, Rum enters the hotel hosting a chess tournament in order to approach Amanda Hughes. Koji Haneda, Amanda’s bodyguard Rachel Asaka, and Hyoue Kuroda are also involved in the events at the hotel.
Rum corners Amanda and uses APTX 4869 on Koji Haneda. The case links Wakasa’s pursuit of Rum, Kuroda’s memories, and the Akai family’s involvement with the Black Organization.
His Left Eye Could Retain What It Saw
Seventeen years ago, Rum did not hide his left eye behind an eyepatch. It had an extraordinary ability to retain people and situations in fine detail, which he used to analyze behavior and identify vulnerabilities.
The story demonstrates exceptional visual memory, but it does not establish an official medical name for the ability. Rum’s present left eye is prosthetic, yet his tactical skill remains formidable.
His Ties to Rumi Wakasa, Hyoue Kuroda, and Tsutomu Akai
Rachel Asaka, now Rumi Wakasa, served as Amanda’s bodyguard. Kuroda was present during the hotel incident and tried to help Asaka escape the Organization’s pursuit. Tsutomu Akai later encountered Rum while investigating the Koji Haneda case.
The incident gives Wakasa, Kuroda, and Tsutomu separate but intersecting connections to Rum. A case left unresolved for seventeen years returns to the present and draws the next generation into its consequences.
The Anime Adapted the Story in Episodes 1222-1225
Volume 104’s seventeen-year-old case was adapted in four episodes:
- Episode 1222 (Japanese episode 1164), “The 17-Year-Old Truth (The Bloody Knight)”
- Episode 1223 (Japanese episode 1165), “The 17-Year-Old Truth (The Perceptive Devil)”

These episodes show the younger Rum, the deaths of Amanda and Koji, and the links among Asaka and Kuroda, but they do not adapt Conan’s File 1150 deduction.

Soon after the Bourbon mystery reaches a turning point, the story introduces an even more senior figure: Rum, the boss’s close aide and the organization’s number two.
Volume 92 and Episodes 949-950 Introduce Kanenori Wakita
Wakita first appears in Volume 92, Files 975-977 and international Episodes 949-950 (Japanese episodes 894-895), “The Tokyo-Style Detective Show Next Door (Part 1)” and “The Tokyo-Style Detective Show Next Door (Part 2).”
He approaches Kogoro as an Iroha Sushi chef, wears an eyepatch over his left eye, and asks to become Kogoro’s apprentice. The conspicuous eye trait makes him an immediate Rum suspect, while his openness can also make him seem almost too obvious.
Volume 100 and Episodes 1135-1137 Reveal Him to the Audience
In Volume 100 and international Episodes 1135-1137 (Japanese episodes 1077-1079), Rum directs the attacks on the FBI and Camel is cornered on Umizaru Island. Conan, Akai, and Yusaku coordinate his rescue.
File 1066 and Episode 1137 reveal Wakita as Rum to the audience, but Conan still does not know his identity. The solution is public to readers and viewers while remaining hidden from the hero.
Volume 104 and Episodes 1222-1225 Reveal His Past and Ability
Volume 104 and international Episodes 1222-1225 (Japanese episodes 1164-1167) return to the hotel case from seventeen years earlier. They clarify how Amanda, Koji, Asaka, Kuroda, and Rum became connected.
They also show Rum before he lost the use of his left eye and establish its extraordinary visual memory without assigning the ability a confirmed medical label.
Volume 108, File 1150 Lets Conan’s Side Identify Him
In Volume 108, File 1150, Camel links Wakita with the figure from two years earlier, and Conan organizes the eyepatch, speech, name, and Haibara’s reaction into a single explanation.
Conan, Akai, and the FBI now identify Wakita as Rum, but recognizing him is not the same as capturing him or learning every part of his plan. The answer moves the conflict into a more dangerous phase.
Summary
